| Miami Vice (Filler post until I see it this weekend) Been looking forward to this Michael Mann film. Hopefully my high expectations coming in (mostly from Heat and Collateral), don't ruin my enjoyment of the film. For those who haven't read up on this movie, it shouldn't be another cheesy remake ala Dukes of Hazzard or Starsky & Hutch. Michael Mann actually created/produced the tv series, and even directed a few episodes. This summer has been missing a good R-rated action movie--I didn't catch the limited release French action movie District13. .. Ok just saw it-- definitely worth seeing in theatres if you enjoy gritty "realistic" cop movies. There is no buddy comedy (think Lethal weapon / rush hour) in this movie. I don't want to give too much away, but the shootouts and action sequences were really well done and there were some great camera shots of the violence. There's not much exposition in the movie, as you are kind of thrown into the middle of it when it begins. Also, there's no token angry black police captain/chief yelling at renegade cops. All in all this movie isn't quite on the level as Heat, but I rate this movie a little better than Collateral maybe 7.5/10. Last edited by benbadman : 07-28-2006 at 03:49 PM. |

+20 Internets | I never watched Miami Vice when I was a kid, may have had something to do with me being about 4 or 5 years old, if that. But I love Heat, one of the best gangster/heist movies of all time imo. That shootout in the street is really brutal. Collateral was good too, you knew what would end up happening but it was still really good. looking forward to it, even though I kind of despise Collin Farrel. |

| Going to see it in about an hour. I hope it lives up to both the TV series, which I watched every single episode of in the 80s, and Mann's previous films... but that's a tall order right there. Also, it's disappointing that both Edward James Olmos (Castillo on TV) and Jan Hammer (wrote the theme song--which isn't used in the movie at all--and a lot of the other music for the show) declined to do the movie. And yea, I hate Farrell too. Edit -- I agree with benbadman, it's somewhere between Collateral and Heat. Pacing is a little off, some stuff takes up way too much screen time, and it lacks exposition in other areas, making it feel like a 2h20m movie where not a whole lot really happens. It doesn't really have that much of a Miami Vice the show vibe either. Mann is still second to none when it comes to filming a shootout though, and that more than makes up for any shortcomings in the movie. 8/10 Last edited by Vorph : 07-28-2006 at 04:53 PM. |

| Went to see it this afternoon, not a major fan of the series, although it looks like most of the critics that had something bad to say about it were trying to compare/contrast. I can't really fault anything with the movie, except that they prolly did cut out a few scenes to save for the DVD and shorten the theater screen time under 2.5 hours. Majority of the action focuses on Colin instead of Jamie, but he carries it well, mustache and stubbly all over. Fight / gun battle scenes were the most believable ones I've seen in a long time. Holy shit for automatic weapon fire that sounds like automatic weapon fire. Only complaint is that I would have liked to see more tit in the near-naked scenes. Looking forward to a sequel.

+9 Internets | god the movie sucked balls, they need to stop making movies like this and just throw the money into charity or give it to me, fucking unbeliveable. the entire movie is a soap oprah of colin and that asian chick and jamie and his wife, it was pathetic. the storyline was boreing, the acting was amateurish so was the filming, I did like some parts of the movie but overall It wasen't worth the 10 bucks.

| Saw this last night. Worst movie Michael Mann has made that I've seen. Would be one of the worst movies of the year if it weren't for the gun fight scene, and the scene at the beginning where a car gets 200 bullets put into it. This movie is so fucking long. I have never seen a movie that could have benefited more from a tighter script and better editing except for Return of the King. I have never seen a mid-movie romance more fake and ponderous except for Attack of the Clones. This movie's plot is convoluted and incoherent to the point of nonsense. There is only one reason to see this movie, and that is a gunfight at the end that is on par with the shootout in Heat. |
