| On the 2 disc set that was released today they have a preview of that 4 disc set (I saw preview and clicked it thinking "ooh, two towers extended teaser!".) Man, now i'm pissed. 30 minutes of cut footage that had more detaily kinda scenes...grr. *mutters some profanity* I thought that was funny as hell. The featurette that kept on plugging all of the Tolkein books and assorted "accessory" books was funny too. Of course that one was made by the book publisher, sooo... |

+29 Internets | I like the DVD, it's good and everything, but it sorta pisses me off how commercialized they are making the whole thing. Tolkien is probably rolling over in his grave right now.. I mean fuck, you can buy 100 dollar replicas of the swords etc. It also bugs the hell out of me the way they handled this Special Edition DVD thing too. Smart business decision, and I still consider the cost of buying it twice well worth it, I just wish I didn't have to buy the original DVD three months before the special edition. One thing I noticed while watching the first part of the movie last night: the special effects aren't nearly as well done as I thought they were in the theatre (I only saw it once). An example is when Bilbo and Gandalf first meet at the beginning in Bag End. They are standing near a fire, and several times Bilbo passes between the fire and Gandalf (which is lighting his robe) yet no shadow passes across him. There are several scenes where this is noticeable, when there are characters of different sizes on the same screen. A continuity issue is when Sam and Frodo are standing in the corn field near a scarecrow, and Sam is talking about how if he takes one more step he will be the farthest from home he has been. The camera moves between a zoomed out view, and a closer one several times. It is quite easy to see that in these two different angles, Sam is standing a noticeable amount further away from the scarecrow in one. Little niggles I guess, but stuff like that always bugs the hell out of me. Ocean's Eleven was pretty bad for continuity, and it sort of wrecked the movie for me. |

| hah. Yeah, I only saw it once too. While I was watching the dvd I tried to spot a little goof I had seen the first time around...I could have sworn that in the battle near the end one of the dead orcs half got up and then dropped back to the ground when he noticed they were still shooting. But I didn't see that again...sort of a out of the corner of your eye thing, probably a lot less noticeable on tv size. the brief skirmish between saruman and gandalf looked a lot sillier to me this time around too. He mostly just floated gandalf's body around while keeping his head polishing the floor...I was thinking "Bavmorda!" this time around. In theaters it was just so...big. My normal sarcastic remarks didn't kick in =) Last edited by Iannis : 08-07-2002 at 07:55 AM. |

| lol they still sell separate DVDs for pan n scan and wide screen?? I thought they did away with that in 1968. I'll be waiting for the extended version. They can take their money making "George Lucas" schemes and shove it up their proverbial asses. just wish I didn't have to buy the original DVD three months before the special edition. umm no you didnt. No one forced you to buy the DVD 3 months prior. All it means is that you have money to burn. For the most part Peter Jackson has nothing to do with this. He still made a good movie. But the studio is in charge of the marketing not him. So be it Shakespeare or Schwarzenegger you best believe theyre going to milk the fuck out of the movie each and every way they can. |

+29 Internets | Sheesh, relax. Sorry for using the word "have". Or not wording it better. I know I don't HAVE to buy it now and then again later, but I really wanted to see it a few times right away (translation: I am smoking the last of my stash then quitting for at least a few months). So I felt compelled to buy the version out right now. But in 3 months I again will feel compelled to buy the 4 DVD one. Like I said, it's not a huge deal to me. Even after buying both I will still feel the cost was well worth it, no doubt in my mind. I just think it is a very underhanded and cheesy thing to do, and there is fuck all I can do about it. It's just frustrating is all. And I don't think I ever personally accused Peter Jackson of doing it himself. |
