X3 reviews (NO VISIBLE SPOILERS)

I realize some people are putting reviews at the end of the other thread, but I think it should have it's own thread now that it's out and that one is so long. I think Millie will agree, and maybe move the other reviews into this thread to make things easier for everyone.

Anyway, I echo what some of the other people have said. The plot and some of the performances were lacking compared to X1 and X2, but Brett Ratner did do one thing good, and he did it VERY good. The mutant powers. For once, we get to see them use their powers for real and in some very cool action sequences. Basically, take nightcrawler's opening fight sequence in X2 and make that about 30 minutes of the movie. Different mutants just owning shit.

That alone is something many comic book fans have been wanting to see forever, and is worth the price of admission.

However, they truly do kill off the franchise with this movie. The much touted 'some mutant dies' part wasn't joking around.

SPOILERS AHEAD. HIGHLIGHT TO READ: I JUST SET IT TO BLACK, SO IF YOU HAVE AN OFF-CONTRAST MONITOR YOU STILL MAY SEE THEM.

Cyclops, Jean Gray, Mystique, Magneto, Professor X, all the new scrub mutants.. jesus, it was almost easier to keep track of who DIDN'T get taken out. Sure, the cop-out duel endings with Magneto and Prof X. (hope you guys stayed after the credits for the 2nd 'haha just kidding' ending for him.. actually if you didn't, it wasn't much to miss) let them come back if need be. But, Cyclops and Jean Grey are gone for sure, and I can't see how they will justify Prof X looking/sounding the same if he only transferred his consciousness. Mystique could come back the same way they hinted Magneto could come back. So, they left the door open, but only enough for a very shitty continuation. Therefore, the franchise is definetly dead even if they make another, as it'll be so convoluted to get any of the main mutants back already. That's a shame.


P.S. I'm the Juggernaut, Bitch! was actually said. They just took 'bitch' out of the trailer. Half the audience was laughing, but I don't think it was because of the internet video, it was just a funny line. Half of my group laughed, and hadn't ever seen the cartoon video dub.

Just got back from midnight showing. I'll start by saying I don't know the detail/storyline behind a lot of the X-Men stuff... just the basics from minor comic reading, the cartoons, etc. Also, if you go see it, DO NOT LEAVE until the credits are finished rolling.

I liked it quite a bit more than I thought I would. The action was good and the story was interesting, though a bit too spread out. There were some definate ballsy moves in there that I didn't see coming as well. Thankfully, Juggernaght didn't talk much. I would see it again.

I will note that I went with 2 people who did know the "lore" of X-Men better and they didn't like it, mostly because it fucked with the history too much. Honestly though, who goes into these movies anymore thinking you are going to see your favorite comic story copy and pasted onto the big screen? It should be pretty apparent to anyone that any game/comic is going to get it's history/characters changed quite a bit in the conversion. Get over it.

It's pretty obvious they left themselves open for another sequal. With the hint that the loss of mutant powers is temporary and Xavier being alive, I'm sure we'll get X-Men 4.

Did anyone else have their theater burst into applause when Mystique lost her powers?

I haven't seen the movie yet but I want to know, does Wolverine get his skeleton ripped out in this? I've heard a couple rumors lately that he does but no one has been able to confirm or deny it.

dont forget, Rogue's happy ending could be ruined by her powers returning as well. If magneto is getting his power back after being hit with the cure, she can as well.

But mostly i was disappointed that nightcrawler didnt show up again and yet porcupineboy and boy george (seismic shock guy/girl/thing) had a semi-big roles?

Overall, alot of action and nice combat scenes compared to the previous ones. Made the 2 hours fly by pretty well.

Heh, I was pissed at X-Men 1 for this (I still liked the movies though). Dunno how anyone could get all the way to the third movie and still expect the plot/history to be anything at all like the comic. Haven't seen 3 yet, catching the noon show today.

When they first introduced Juggernaut, he didn't say "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!"... he just said something like "They call me Juggernaut". I heard about 5-10 people say "BITCH!" rather loudly after he said that, heh.

It was pretty good... nothing great though. Worth seeing if you liked the first two.

Saw the film last night and oh did it suck. There were a few effects that looked half-baked, most notably Iceman's ice covering that looked like the TLC Waterfalls video circa 1995.

Overall, the film suffered from HORRIBLE directing. Anytime you see solid actors prancing around like retards and sounding like assholes, you know your director stinks. There weren't any lines as bad as "NOOOOO!!" but there were a few that came close. Magneto delivered a "what have I done?" that should have been edited out or redone... something. It was aweful.

The Mutant School is supposed to be on the East Coast. A lot of the action in the film takes place in San Francisco. There are about a half dozen instances where someone just randomly nips off from one to the other like it's no big deal. No motorcycle journey. No explanation of how they got there. Just "Hey, I was just in CALI-FUCKING-FORNIA a few minutes ago, now I'm back, but we have to get there now!!!1!lol!!1!" Horrible... horrible plot hole.

Vinnie Jones? Wasted. Could have been played by anyone. Most of the other characters? Wasted. Cyclops? Goes out like a punk.

Many of the scenes and sequences went on for way too long or had music that was innapropriately dramatic.

The film wasn't as bad as Star Wars Episode III, but it was close. The second X-Men film is by far the strongest.

Ok, disregard what I said earlier, Malakie's friend was right. They went too fucking far, especially considering that the last few seconds and the bit after the credits leave room for them to easily change their minds about this being the last movie.

I loved the effects and how they brought the mutant powers to life; WETA did a fantastic job, probably the best effects I've seen in a movie so far. It was the plot that ruined the movie for me... I hated every single major plot point in it, although none so much as (spoilers follow)Magneto's reaction to Mystique getting 'cured.' I actually thought they got Magneto's character and motivations pretty well until that happened. From that point on, Magneto's character just goes to shit, right up to the godawful "what have I done?" line.

Anyway, I'm too pissed off at what I just saw to even bother trying to review the movie. Worst of all, it all but guarantees that an X-Factor movie will never happen. Ever since the first X-Men, I'd been hoping we'd eventually get a Four Horsemen of Apocalypse adaptation.

6/10 (2/10 for plot averaged with 10/10 for everything else.)


Edit: Oh yea, Wolverine going apeshit with claws in a PG-13 (bloodless) movie looks absolutely retarded. Hopefully the people making the Wolverine movie have at least a little sense.

Minor spoiler Anyone else notice the continuity problem after the bridge scene. He tears up the bridge and moves it during the day. Soon as he's done, turns around to look at the people in the car, and turns back to alcatraz, it's suddenly night time.

I'm not very familiar with X-Factor, but why is it is impossible to make one now?

The movie was pretty average. Of the big May blockbusters that I have seen (MI3, Da Vinci), this one was the least interesting. I enjoyed the first two X-Men movies, but I honestly should have waited to catch this on HBO in a year. The dialogue was corny like every X-Men movie, but something about the plot just seemed to not click. I'm a fan of Ratner's other "films" (check out After the Sunset, its pretty entertaining!) but he seemed a bit lost with what to do with the ensemble cast of mutant superheroes.
