Or, here's a better example, what specific cinematic moment from Pirates jumps to your memory when recalling it. Think: T-Rex showing up in Jurassic Park, or the Titanic crashing and sinking, or 'ET phone home..', etc..

To be put among the ranks of these films, I just expected to truly be wowed. Pirates is at like #10 on the all-time USA box office gross already, it's still holding at #2 this past weekend. It could easily make it in the top 5 before long. In terms of $$, that means it's as good as Titanic, Star Wars and ET. I have not seen unanimous reviews suggesting it deserves that kind of pedigree.
I think you're right...we are used to CGI now. Jurrasic Park obviously floored us because it was as realistic CGI that had been produced. I can't think of many moments past Jurrasic Park (Maybe the Trex fight scene in King Kong?) that looked as state of the art for it's time.

I WAS however impressed with the Kraken about to swallow Jack secen for one reason only...The hero was bout to get fucked up harshly. The overall impact of the scene did it. Not the actual CGI.

I may see this again tonite.

All bow to Jerry Bruckheimer!

That being said, I felt the movie was weak. Sure the action and humor was well done (special mention for the cage scene with Bloom and the crew) but the plot was lacking - over 2h of movie to tell couple lines worth of plot? TBH the best thing was knowing Rush will have a role again, his Barbossa is superb.

The thing is, can't do much more - first film had a script nurtured over years, second was possibly cooked up by script doctors in order to fit the filming schedule.

EDIT: did anyone else scream LECHUCK! when they saw davy jones?
