| The New World I love this movie. It's supposed to be a historically accurate telling of the story of John Smith & Pocahontus (sp..) .. Really good. It's an "artsy" type movie, with lots of .. I don't know how ot say it, like overdubbed speaking, where they are just looking at each other and they are talking. Beautiful girl in it too!

+10 Internets | She's incredibly ugly yet absolutely beautiful. That's not the smallest mystery of this movie which happened to easily be the best american movie... well... ever? Allow me this slight exageration... Anyway it has allready been discussed in a topic I started a month or two ago.

| I rented the DvD a few days ago and I honestly couldnt finish it heh. It wasnt *bad* like a "B" rated movie or anything it just bored the shit out of me. I stopped watching after the first battle at jamestown... I figured that if a battle scene accually bores me further that perhaps I shouldnt waste another hour of my life and go watch something else ![]() |

+10 Internets | I never saw The Last Samurai. I suspect I would not like it much considering several friends of mine with sorta similar taste in movies found it terrible.

It is not by a long shot an historically accurate telling of the story however, nor was it intended to be one. Quite the opposite, Terrence Maliks aim was to bring the "myth" to the big screen, not the "truth" (hence the artsy style of the movie as well). Most historians seem to agree that there never was much of anything between John Smith & Pocahontas. The first mention of Pocahontas in Smiths diary comes some 15 or 20 years after she died and became a celebrity and John Smith just happend to be rather broke and desperate. It's a bit like someone claiming nowadays to be Princess Dianes secret lover, back before she became Princess in the first place or some such idiocy. Pull it of convincingly, and you could make a forune the way John Smith did.

The overall effect is somewhat diluted by the somewhat pathetic ending and a few wierd scenes that seem to have no point other than to squeeze in some japan-clichee or another (like massive and less-than-stealty ninja-attacks for example.. they just seem to happen in Japan on cloudy nights the way thunderstorms sometimes strike other parts of the world.. no worry that it doesn't make the faintest sense and is in no way connected to the story of Last Samurai to have a bunch of black-clad suicide-goons rushing in so that Tom can show off his new katana skillz)
