I'm actually currently reading ASoI&F (All thanks to you people who went on and on and on about it being so damn awesome) and holy fucking balls i'm almost done with A Storm of Swords and this is one of the best stories i've ever read in my life; it really is as good as people make it out to be.

Whoever said Martin isn't afraid to kill main characters is right. As soon as I think i've figured out what the main battle of 'main good guy' versus 'main bad guy' he kills them off or something. At first i'm pissed, but i'm always left with "damn, what the hell is going to happen now?!" and can't stop reading it.

Honestly if you do end up reading WoT, wait until the next (final) book is out. Jordan has cancer, he went through treatment and it looks good, but you know how that goes. So, wait until he finishes it or you're going to be really pissed.

The first 6 books are great, 7-10 were boring. I haven't read 11 yet but I hear it's great. I'm waiting to see if Jordan dies or not before reading it =p

Good call on Ice and Fire, awesome series.

And I thought this whole time that ASoI&F ended with A Feast for Crows, but i'm hearing that Martin is going to write 3 more books in the series making it a solid 7 Book series? Damn I can't wait.

ASoIaF is kind of like two trilogies with Feast being a tweener book. That's why it suffered, and the damn editors splitting it up...

Yeah, Feast for Crows is sorta one half of the fourth back. The other half is name A Dance with Dragons (or close, too lazy to hit it up) and the chapters are with Daenerys, Jon, Tyrion and a couple of others whereas Feast involves Jaime, Samwell and the bitch. Can't wait for Dance. After that, there's supposedly 2 more books coming up.

As I've seen like a million times before on the internet - ASOIAF owns all. Best read ever.

ASOIAF was hard for me to get into. I started reading it a while ago and it was really super dull for like the first hundred pages. 700 names flying out at me and confuddling my simple mind. I tossed it aside for like 2 years to bake in my car. One day out on a trip to a restaurant I had forgotten a book so I grabbed the first one I could find: asoiaf and started reading it right from where I left off. I didnt set that book down for the rest of the day. Holy shit it gets good. Best read ever is the truth.

The Dunk and Egg short stories are excellent too if you're done with the ASoIAF books and just awaiting the next book. It's set a little more than a century before the Game of Thrones and it's really fun if you've gotten into the history and setting of ASoIAF. It goes a long way defining the Targaryens past Viserys' two-dimensional presentation of them.

Actually, I'm all for an HBO/BBC production of ASoIAF so long as it's a multi-season deal and is adapted for the screen by Martin himself (who's actually had plenty of experience writing screenplays). You don't even need to dwell on the massive sprawling set-piece battles, because honestly, Martin doesn't go into tmuch detail about them himself. He's all about those personal knock-down cuttthroat gutter fights than anything else.

But I'm curious why there hasn't been a VIDEOGAME established already (theres tons of lore at www.westeros.org and www.georgerrmartin.com) and you have a built-in subscription base. Seems like a no-brainer, honestly.

Speaking of the regular subject, I recently read eragon since I found a copy of the book and I read books at a rate of about 2/week. Eragon didn't impress me too much. It just seemed like he took wheel of time and d&d lore and mashed them together for one mess. The chars were terribly flat, and I felt like everything was pre-ordained to their predictable consistancy. The characters were all far too smart, too. They figured everything out correctly without any trouble at exactly the right times. Stuff like that annoys me, personally.

One of the main reasons I liked ASOIAF is the fact that the characters are human. They are varied. You just cant predict what is going to happen, but there is a logical flow to events which means that despite the randomness- there is a whole picture that makes sense and becomes clearer with each event. That is great storytelling, because it reflects real life and is something we can relate to. Eragon just felt like a cheesy cartoon to me. And its not just because he aims at kids. Kid stories can be written with the same variety as asoiaf without the adult tone. Harry potter books pulled it off well I think. The chars aren't nearly as flat as in Eragon.

Gotta remember the book was written by an 18ish year old. He was 20 when the book was published so not sure how long he had been writing it.

Especially when they use it as a gimmick to sell the books.

Eragon = Kid's story, written by *gasp* a kid.

Harry Potter = Kid's story, written by an adult.

Not the same.
