I guess I hold out hope because he used to write for television, so maybe he would be willing to adapt the books into a script, preferably making it the greatest HBO series ever

That would be the route I'd like to see it go. Rome and Deadwood are very good as historicals and maturity wise, all HBO would need to do was throw out some extra cash for some of the large battles, instead of skipping them like Rome does. Either 12 episodes a season or a mini-series for each novel.

Hell Id sign up for HBO twice if they did an ASoFaI series. On the other hand if Sci-Fi tries to do it I'm gonna shoot somebody.

To derail, I heard a rumor that HBO is thinking of doing a Preacher (Garth Ennis) series.

Oh yeah and to bring it back to the topic on hand, I havent read any of the books but if that one post is correct (the spoiler one) then they suck. Hard.

This is obviously minor, but I couldn't help but laugh at this part of the "Legend" tab at the official site:

Quote:
During a reckless trip Galbatorix and two friends were ambushed, his friends killed, and his dragon slayed.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm of the impression "slayed" isn't even a proper word (slay, slew, slain). Did the author write the website summaries up when he was 15 as well?

Just wanted to say that the trailer is going to be debuted officially before Snakes on a Plane =/ It should be available on the internet the day before or so. If anyone gets a hold of it before me, please post here so I can indulge my fangirl desires.

Thanks =)

Haven't read the books, but what I gather from a friend that has is that these were written by a young kid (teens) and are basically a mish-mash of ideas from a variety of other fantasy books. When he explained the books, I caught obvious use of ideas from LOTR, Earthsea, and a few other books.

Star Wars and LOTR are the two I hear mentioned all the time.

Ok I'll just say it now, since it's been rehased 9 thousand damn times in this thread alone. (Ok maybe I lied, but ffs)

Eragon is a book that is NOT intended for the A Song of Ice and Fire crowd. Duh. It sounds, reads, and has a plotline that is very simple, and overused, because it is intended for children, or the younger crowd. Duh.

No one reads Harry Potter and complains about it being juvenile or 'man this looks like it was written by a 17 year old' do they? Why? Cause the book is obviously for children.

Yes, it has borrowed ideas from other series. Perhaps it's because (now remember, this book is aimed for the younger crowd) not every little Timmy on the corner runs and picks up ASoI&F or The Wheel of Time as soon as they hit puberty. To us, these themes are overused; to the new reader, these themes are as bad ass as they were for us the first time we saw them used.

Just because it's popular, and you've heard of it does not mean it was intended to be read and enjoyed by you. Complaining of the juvenile-ness of a children's book is about as pointless as saying "Spongebob blows ass; it's so juvenile and immature."

I've been reading WoT since I was twelve. I've barely read any fantasy books because of that reason, I think. Everything seemed stupid/childish next to it.

Now that I started reading A Song of Ice and Fire, WoT seems childish. Does this mean I can't read any more fantasy books? I wish writers would step up and start doing more badass works for people who don't like the "Every hero is a super badass and can never die and can cast any spell they want at little cost to themselves, etc." horse shit that fantasy novelists shovel down our throats.

We shouldn't have to resort to reading childrens books and feeling like flaming faggots/nerds because of it. We just need some more writers with balls, like Martin.

P.S. Making fun of a 26 year old who reads Harry Potter is justified. If someone made fun of me for reading ASOIAF I would crush thier face with a mace, then rape thier mother on a pile of corpses.

There's plenty of stuff going round if you look for it. For example the "Prince of Nothing" books by R. Scott Bakker have been a good read recently. Not up there with Martin (who really is?), but defenitly a not-for-children fantasy series.

These things are out there..

Gore, sex & violence the Martin style isn't really more mature than Harry Potter IMO. It's just a different sort of escapism literature.

To be honest I just wanted to say "smash thier face with a mace and rape thier mother on a pile of corpses".

It's not too often you get to say that you know.

I hate the 'only Martin is badass' crowd. Why do we have to support one author at the expense of all the others? Martin is probably the fantasy writer of the decade but he isn't the only one doing great stuff, nor is his stuff great because of the violence. Its characterization, mythology, and guess what? His ability to hide the fact that the story is still basically the boy king who doesn't know his parents, are what rock. His prose could actually be better, truth be told.

Erikson, Hobb, and Bujold (her fantasy novels) are all as good as Martin. I've heard good things about Sanderson and Bakker as well but haven't read them yet. Go have fun.

I usually read clancy and detective novels, but have been getting into fantasy lately. I enjoyed the LOTR series when I was young, and again a few years ago. I'm enjoying eragon now, it's a little bit simple, but entertaining.

I've been looking into wheel of time, but I tell you, I really hate writers who can't rap up a multi volume story in (at the very most) 5 or 6 books. It turned me off the King's Gunnlinger story, which sucked at the end anyways, and it made me throw away all of my left behind books and turn my back on god.

So - is going through those 11+ books honestly worth it?

I've already decided to pick up a song of Ice and Fire - looks great.

I like Harry Potter, fags.

EDIT:
No, Wheel of Time is not worth it. It was kind of interesting for a few books and then he starts writing about nothing for 50+ pages at a time.

Good fantasy series:
A Song of Ice and Fire
Earthsea
Book of the New Sun (a little scifi and fantasy, but a great series overall)
