My buddy incorrectly predicted it would be "Venus" which would have been great, since Venus is for females or whatever, and the whole thing is about the female being the holy grail or whatever.

I don't see how a goddess from Roman mythology would be relevant in a plotline about Christianity even if some Renaissance painters tend to blur the line between the two. Not trying to sound like an ass, just sayin'

Just another pseudo-intellectual bashing DVC because it's popular.
You should put a spoiler note beforehand so as to not ruin the surprise for the real intellectuals such as yourself who are stunned by the genius of puzzles such as the aforementioned.

I thought it was going to be Venus too. Venus would have been good.

Yea, popular with non-intellectuals.

There's nothing wrong with the book. It's not Crime & Punishment, nor is it meant to be. It's an entertaining read, not meant to be fulfilling or sustaining.

It's mental popcorn.

Shut up with the "you don't like it because its popular" bullshit. What a powerful argument that is. That's like the fat women that go on about their curves and telling everying "you're just jealous!"

You posted the same thing twice, more or less, and my response was nothing more than me sinking to the same level.

Dismissing the fact that some people hate this book and think Dan Brown is one of the worst writers of our time by calling them pseudo-intellectuals and saying the real reason they don't like it is because it's popular is bullshit. Read the part of the book I quoted above again. That's popcorn alright--month-old popcorn that was scraped off the filthy, sticky theater floor before being placed in the tub. And then the kid behind the concession stand pisses in it instead of asking if you want butter. Munch away!

Just wanted to clarify whether it was a jewish puzzle box with an english alphabet. I presume "Apple" has to do something with Adam and Eve as well - any clarification would be great cause it's starting to remind me why i avoided this book for 3+ years although I am a pretty voracious reader.

Nah, wrong apple. It refers to Isaac Newton (gravitational theory). And I don't know what a jewish puzzle box is, but Dan Brown called it a cryptex.

For as many God-haters as there are on this board, I'm surprised more people aren't more excited at the "possibility" of some of this being true.

It's just a book, right? That's what the Romans said 2000 years ago.

That would be far too clever for what the author had in mind. Oh wait, but we're forgetting the riddle that came with the cryptex. "seek the orb that should be on the tomb of 'a knight a pope interred.'" See? It's brilliant. I'm sure I wasn't the only person in the theatre who felt owned when they found out the answer is apple. I felt that the theatre had just swindled me out of some money.

Oh Christ, does this have to do with Alexander Pope doing a eulogy for Isaac Newton when he refers to "a pope interred"? That would be so horrible.

I really hate that the book has shifted the debate from whether God exists to whether Jesus had kids. Somewhere along the way Christianity was validated and we moved on to the questions that already imply that Christianity is true simply by their mere existence.

There's plenty wrong, as I and others have pointed out, with the writing style, his "facts", and his claims that the book is actually much more than just a fiction popcorn book due to it's "accuracy" on facts and history.

I think it's a reflection that there's a fair number of intelligent people on this board who can see that the book is just plain shitty, despite the fact that it may agree with their opinions on the Catholic church and all that. I'm all for exposing all the terrible things that the Church has done in the name of god in the past couple millenia. I just don't want my views to be associated with this steaming pile.

But yeah, when I talk about the book with friends or other people, a lot of times it's obvious they cling to it because it agrees with their worldview, and they get very defensive when I go after it, and they're often confused by that since otherwise I agree with them.

I also want to know if anyone seriously believed that Harvard has professors of "symbology".
