| So, how does one go about viewing these films that haven't been released in the U.S.? E-bay? Is there a way to *ahem* download them? I don't imagine they're at blockbuster...

+37 Internets | Personally I don't think it's possible for a movie to have "hardcore" sex and be decent as a story. The sex would only distract from the story itself. It would be pointless to even try it. Hell, half the time I watch a regular movie I find the "love" scenes to be completely flivorous and unnecessary. It would only be worse if they were showing penetration (let alone close ups of it). |

+19 Internets | Does Monster's Ball get points for trying? While it doesn't have money shots or close-up penetration, the sex scene in that movie is raw and rife with the sounds and sweat of sex. Its not softcore in the sense that it doesn't attempt to make the sex look glossy/pretty nor attempt to drown it in music. That sex scene felt as real as it gets, without relying the camera angles found in porn. He Got Game also comes to mind for its montage scene. Last edited by Jayblah : 05-17-2006 at 03:39 PM. |

As far as it being a distraction... probably at first. I'm sure if you hopped into your time machine and showed Monster's Ball to an audience in the 1950's the ONLY thing they'd be able to talk about was the sex (that and a white man shagging a black woman on camera). Today, we see it, think "Hmm. That was kinda extreme" and go on with our lives. I contend that hardcore could be done well. The right direct could make it add to the story. Quote:

As far as the rest of your post goes, you might well be right. I just don't personally see how close-ups of penetration would add anything to a movie or story. | |

| Runnen brings up a good point. A History of Violence is a good example. It's got some REALLY sexy scenes in it along with frontal nudity... ... but it didn't get labeled as a film about sex. In fact, American audiences are really sort of bored with films about sex. Eyes Wide Shut didn't do so hot at the box office and neither did Basic Instinct II or other films about sex specifically. It's when sex is mixed in with some other story that it becomes worth watching. HoV is a good example where the sex added to the story. It established how much in love the two characters are, what the chick is willing to do for her man and how they have a healthy sexual relationship. Goodness forbid Hollywood actually show two people having sex that actually LOOKS LIKE two people having sex.

+16 Internets | I am pretty sure it's possible to put some graffic hardcore sex scenes into a movie in a way that makes sense. I am also pretty sure 9 Songs shows how not to do it (there is an artifical crescendo in the representation of the sex scene that is completely gratuitous since the characters do have sex from the begining of the movie). Never seen The Brown Bunny though...

You can add "Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom", and "The Idiots" from Lars von Triers , which are both excellent movies imo. I wouldn't put Irreversible in there (the one with Monica Belluci), because you do not acctualy see a penetration in the movie.
