A Scanner Darkly

Ok , three things.

1. Keanu Reeves is in it. I know terrible actor, always dull dialogue, but I dont NOT watch movies he is in. In fact outside of Feeling Minesota, I enjoyed all his films with an inner guilty pleasure. Plus this could be his best shit to date.

2. Movie is based off a book by Philip A Dick. Anyone who knows the author , knows that he is pretty on par with detail, even when his books are translated to film. Great writer.

3. Director is the same guy who did Dazed and Confused and A Waking Life. The whole movie is drawn. Its the new techni-color, where its filmed then drawn over the cells again with shading. Very cool shit.

Youtube doesnt do the trailer justice cause the shitty convert to flash is too pixeled, you cant tell its all hand drawn. So I implore you all to download quicktime and watch it on the official site.

hope you enjoy, this looks to be a great film.

No problems with Keanu here, especially in this sort of movie.

I think it's Dick's best book, so I really hope they don't fuck it up or change the characters too much. Linklater seems like a really good choice for director though.

Rotoscoping, and yea, it's a very cool effect. Too bad it's ungodly time-consuming to do, the movie got delayed almost an entire year in post production because of it.

I'd give 'em this link instead -- http://www.apple.com/trailers/warner...scannerdarkly/

The 720p (1080p if you have a Dell 2405) one looks amazing if you've got a video card that can decode it without dropping frames.

There was an older thread on this too, but I'll be damned if I can find it... searching for the title, Philip Dick, even "rotoscop" came up empty and I know I made a post about the rotoscoping stuff in it. Oh well.

Loving it..

I for one do not mind Keanu at all, I enjoy almost all his flicks. I think most people find it easier to just jump on the bandwagon and call his acting shit instead of just enjoying the film.

Well true ... when he wasn't on the bad-see-mushroom drugs. Then again, maybe that's why he was a good sci-fi writer. Seriously though, you'll read one book and say "OK cool story" and then read another and say "WTF is this?!? Science fiction? It was written by goddamn real aliens FFS".

here's the bit on the glitch.

Anyway, this is sure to be awesome, even though it'll obviously take a fat shit on the original book which would be impossible to make a visual representation of without hedging some things... this story basically summarizes the effects of drugs on a culture at large, paranoia and split modes of existing...

Looks gawdaweful. Might sneak in to see it or download, but I wouldn't pay cash for that.

Why, oh why does canoe reeves still get work in hollyweird?

News from Cannes, on imdb...

Quote:
Director Richard Linklater has suggested that the animation process called rotoscoping, in which artists trace over live-action scenes frame by frame, then add subtle alterations, may provide a low-cost method to bring complicated, adult-oriented science-fiction tales to the screen. Linklater, whose rotoscoped A Scanner Darkly [N] is screening out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival (his Fast Food Nation [N] is also screening in competition, making him the only director ever to have two films at the festival simultaneously), told a news conference that while the film was shot in just 23 days, the artists took more than a year and a half to complete it. Nevertheless, its total budget came to just $20 million, despite the lengthy post-production and the fact that its cast includes Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder. At a news conference, Reeves and Downey indicated that they agreed to appear in the film because they were fascinated by the script, based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, and because they were intrigued by the rotoscoping process. Reeves commented that it allowed him to work "without limitations," while Downey noted that he could jot down his dialogue on Post-It notes and stick them to objects on the set, knowing that they could be removed by the artists later. The film is due to be released in a handful of theaters on July 7. But when Linklater remarked, "I had no delusions about it being a mainstream film," Reeves interjected, "I did."
I really fucking hate the retards who make stupid decisions like this.
