There were a few black hats, admittedly. Some of the Shadow's allies and President Clarke. But no real white hats. I don't really consider anyone who purposely orders a ship to get itself killed a white hat. Pretty much everyone has a lot of dirt on them. Most anyone the writers bothered to develop had good as well as evil in them.

The early season special effects look like they were done on an Amiga.
They were. Well, a mix of Mac and Amiga, coupled with PCs to provide the rendering horsepower. Part of their limited budget. The show would have been so much more with a lot more budget for special effects.

All the characters were so plastic and the ones who weren't plastic were retarded. There was absolutely no reason to even have any of the non-Vorlon characters be alien races. You could have had the same effect with calling each race a different sect of humans who had gone out and colonized.
It'd be easy to have Vorlons be a human offshoot as well. Just take a few scientists that went off to make an ideal society, weee, all set, well, besides that you'd have to rewrite a bit of their meddling in earth's past, but still...

Plenty easy to justify most anything for anyone with half a brain.

Still, overall, most races will be humanoid for budget reasons. Star Trek no doubt had a lot more cash to throw around and yet you get humans with bumps on their heads. Probably makes it easier to get actors as well.

"Billions of light years away, a race of living beings have developed who almost exactly mirror a bad charicature of 18th century Europe, only with fangs and bad hair. Isn't that amazing? Doesn't that make you want to watch our series? See? Homosexual writing is fun..."
*shrug*

I don't have a problem with it. The stories are written by humans, odds are they'll draw upon many of our experiences. And it makes it easier for people to accept what is provided, to fill in the blanks. Now, I don't want an exact copy of such a society, but using it as a base, why not?

I far prefer it over, say, someone creating a silly female dominated society that spends all of its time sacrificing its males and having inter-house fights, and, oh the race happens to breed rather slowly as well. Such a society wouldn't work and it is obvious that it wouldn't.

I want stuff that is believable.

Part of why I've never been a big fan of Star Trek...Federation society just doesn't seem that believable to me.

But I got giddy everytime the episode was going to be about Lando/G'kar, or whenever Bester made an apperance. However, the chicks were mostly boring from the ground up.
Yah, the whole Londo/G'kar story was the best. The two characters are the ones that changed the most, went through the most, and were there from start to end. Bester was just a great character, always up to something.

I agree that most of the female characters weren't too interesting. But then, the main one was Delenn, the rest didn't get much time. I did like Ivanova though as well as the Martian resistance leader.

But then, DS9 had plenty of bad characters as well. Quark was fun to watch, but not the most interesting. The major...yawn. O'Brien was annoying. And Jake...hi Wesley part 2. The captain, especially in the holodeck/dream type episodes, yawn. But it also had its good ones. Ensemble shows, always going to be certain characters that appeal to certain people.

I liked Garek alot. He was always lying and doing shit behind people's back. Odo /Quark interactions were always fun to watch. And even though he was from TNG, it was always nice to see Worf fleshed out alot more.

DS9 also had some great villains. Kai Wynn, the oppertunist piece of shit. Gul Dukat who was always trying to get in Kira's pants and had an ego the size of a planet. Weyoun, always polite but a cold sadistic fucker when you got down to it. The female shapeshifter and her complete lack of respect for any non-changlings (Scientists havent found a cure? Liquidate them and see if the next batch has a new perspective). Liquidater Brunt and how he was always trying to fuck over Quark (Always liked the one where he bought the rights to Quark's body purely because he wanted to defile his remains in many different ways). Plus the Pah Wraiths were always good for a watch when they would take over someone's body.

The one episode of B5: The Very Long Night of Londo Molari ranks up with the absolute best character spotlights on a tragic figure I have ever seen on TV. I absolutely loved Londo because I could see in him the absolute pettiness that is rampant in the human condition and how its fallout affects not only Londo but everyone else around him. That guy was so complex. At the end of his life after I had seen all their was about Londo and his love/hate relationship with his Centari homeworld it reminded me of John Yates poem Endymion. JMS let you know Londo's fate from Day One and didn't fail in fleshing out his fall.

B5 ruled. And I'm gonna kick your half-Jew ass when I see you again Zhav for your heresy.

I got tired of no overall plotline.

I got tired of every alien race speaking perfect English and looking like a human with a paper plate stapled to their forehead.

I got tired of some esoteric science problem which was solved by some impotent stroke of apparent genius by the crew.

I got tired of ship to ship fights (or lack there of) with no balls.

I got tired of the same two dimensional characters.

In short, why don't you go play "Prime Directive" with the retarded kids by the the jungle gym. The cool kids will be over in the egress learning about Browncoats and The Force.
Oh, ok, so you did watch lots of Star Trek. You're just an idiot then I guess. Probably should have assumed that at the start rather than giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Dude, swallow glass.

I watched star trek because I was a kid and it had cool effects (for the time) and the occasional scantly clad chic. Simply because I recognized it for what it is now that I'm above the age of 15 doesn't mean I'm an idiot. It means you're a fuckwad for for trying to make trek into something it's not: good sci fi. It's space opera. It's "days of our fucking lives" for male nerds.

There's better stuff out there and Gene Roddenbery's shit does not smell like bleeding roses.

Now go listen to korn while you post on myjournal.
