I found the show to be tolerable, and there's no way I was paying to see it in movie form. I think that Whedon did a better job with Buffy the Vampire Slayer (in the later years) and Angel.

The Firely universe is more realistic in a lot of ways than what you see in Star Trek or Star Wars. The characters have depth, the plotlines continue from show to show, and the tension the characters go through just trying to live day to day feels more palpable than the silly randomness of having everything provided for you by a machine that custom makes whatever food you want. There was very few moments of tension in TNG or any ST series outside of the last parts of DS9. Thats why Firefly > Star Trek.

+16 Internets | The primary characters in Firefly were never in any danger either. You really can't count the movie, especially since it was a movie for a canceled series. IMO Farscape took far more risks then Firefly if you want to nitpick about killing off main characters being the measure of a good show. Perhaps you were right about TNG, but DS9 definately didnt hold any punches? By the end of the series, they had killed off alot of people you didnt expect them to...villains and heroes alike. Even if they were only supporting characters, it would still surprise you. Like when Gul Dukat's daughter eats a phaser blast to the heart, causing Dukat to go batshit insane for the rest of the series.

Despite bombing at the box office, Nemesis did surprisingly well at the rentals though.

The whole concept of Firelfly is more appealing. They have to earn a living, they are looking for work, the universe is more realistic to where humanity is today (no aliens, used up earth) and they really have no comforts to speak of, one of the main characters is a professional whore while the rest are petty thieves. Star Trek isn't that gritty by nature. Not to mention there is really no plot continuation in your average Star Trek episodes, you could watch them in any sequence and really not be thrown off. So when Mal is lying on the ship with a gutshot running out of air he wasn't in danger? Or when he was being tourtured by the guy who killed his nephew (can't remember his name atm). He about gets gutted in a sword duel also. Book almost does of a gunshot, so does kaylie. Has Picard ever been shot and had body parts chopped off at the amusment of a psycho, I think not. Hell the episode where Picard gets tortured might have been one of the funniest things I have ever seen. THERE ARE 4 LIGHTS!!1! DS9 is like the aboration of the Star Trek series. That's probably why it is my favorite ST series ever made. They actually had to build a world around the station and continue plots from one episode to the next, it wasn't nearly as random.

| Farscape was hit and miss imo. That combined with how I think shows using muppets cost a lot to make was the reason it got aborted before its time. Whenever I think of Scorpius I can't help but think of that episode where a an imaginery Scorp was walking around in a Hawaiin shirt. That was awesome. |

At least Farscape got a proper sendoff with the miniseries, which completely owned. I was pissed they killed off D'Argo though ;(

Star Trek TNG was one of the least sophistacted shows on TV. I like ST, don't get me wrong, but as a series it has some pretty deep flaws. No one on Star Trek is ever in danger, ever... it's the most "PG" sci fi series ever made and they never take any risks. Tell me one time you watched TNG and thought anyone of importance was in danger. I am pretty sure I have seen every episode and I never got that feeling.

| I was worried about Picard in that one episode where time had stopped in the vicinity of the Enterprise as it was about to have a reactor breach. The one where he drew a smiley face in the smoke coming out of the reactor? Yeah, he spent the travel time on the shuttle pod getting really stoned. Could've totally got demoted for it. |
