New Star Trek Movie to star Kirk and Spock?

Can we copy what George Lucas did any more?

Why not try to create better future shows and movies than to keep retreading the past?

'Star Trek' Franchise Set for Revival
2008 Film to Be Directed by Man Behind 'Lost'

Reuters

LOS ANGELES (April 21) - More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.

The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

Better idea for a series of books than a motion picture.

And where are my DS9 movies? Fuck you Avery Brooks a.ka. The Holdout

But seriously, this looks like a coin flip to me. Heads, you get a film akin to Batman Begins. Tails and you get Episode I.

Sounds like it has some potential and is leaning towards not sucking. We shall see. Star Trek, at its core, has always sucked with brief moments of entertainment.

Seriously, DS9 rocked. A Dominion Wars movie would have kicked ass.

The first couple of years of DS9 were horrendously boring. To tell the truth, I stopped paying attention after the first season.

But when SpikeTV started showing it again, I got to see how much better the writing got after the first couple of seasons. What were they thinking?

Reasons why DS9 stood out:

1) Everyone wasn't constantly sucking everyone else's cock.
It was the first star trek that focused on non-federation characters that didn't always get along.

2) There was some semblance of a long-term story.
Unlike previous star treks, it was only MOSTLY a series of open-ended shows that didn't have anything to do with one another.

It was still stale. It still had people from the far reaches of the universe who looked like actors with paper plates stapled to their foreheads. It still had two dimensional characters.

Not all things can be Serenity / Firefly...

Nemesis bombed because the movie blew ass and deserved to bomb. Personally I would rather have a new movie with a fake kirk and spock if my only choice is between old and next generation.

Or we could just have a movie based around 2 hours of making seven of nine do yoga and aerobics. That would be some good watching too.

I dunno why it took 2 or 3 seasons before the DS9 writers got good. Maybe it just took awhile for them to get a feel for the characters. The early TNG seasons sucked despite Riker being cooler before the beard. Tasha YAR! was so a butch lesbo.

Nemesis bombed because everything cool they did Voyager had done years earlier and that show sucked.

DS9 got better because Ron Moore started working on DS9 during the third season.

On this movie...I'll wait until I see J.J Abrams work on MI3 before I decide, but all his TV stuff has rocked.

And that's what I don't understand about star trek. How does a show that sucks for YEARS manage to stay on the air... while shows like Firefly that own from the beginning get canceled?

They shoud do a movie where seven of nine, hoshi, t'pol, and ezri dax all get trains run on them. I would lay down 9 bucks to see that i would.

They need to change. They shouldn't keep doing the same thing over and over with this story. They need to tell the story differently.

Imagine watching a regular cop show like the million they have on network TV. Then you watch 24. That's what needs to happen with Star Trek.

Because Fox gang raped Firefly really hard.
