PLEASE READ: Posting Spoilers

Recently we had an incident in the Mission Impossible 3 thread where a user posted a spoiler, suddenly and without warning, thus ruining the plot of the movie for many people who happened to be flipping through the thread. I have summarily deleted the post in question, and banned the perpetrator for 10 days. The next time he acts up in a similar fashion, the ban will be permanent.

Rather than go through this dog and pony show every time someone posts an unwarranted spoiler, I'm going to lay some groundwork right now:

1) DO NOT post spoilers in non-spoiler threads. Period. If a thread's title contains "No Spoilers," or anything similar, do not post spoilers.

2) Do not post spoilers in threads which, by nature, are spoiler free. This includes most general discussions about movies, where the spoiler-free nature of the thread can be assumed by just about any reasonable viewer. The MI3 thread was a good example of an implicitly spoiler-free thread, whose sanctity should not have been violated.

3) It's ok to post spoilers in your own thread, provided you label your thread as such. If you're going to create a thread dedicated to spoiling a movie, you must indicate "Spoilers" or "Spoiler Thread" in your thread's title.

4) If you're unclear about the nature of a thread, and whether it's spoiler-free, then give users some warning space before your spoiler. "SPOILER WARNING..." followed by about 10-20 lines of blank space before the spoiler usually suffices, and seems to be standard across movie message boards on the Internet.

Failure to comply with these principles, and/or to use your best judgment when posting spoilers in all instances, will be penalized. Your first violation will result in removal of your post and a temporary ban -- the length of which will be determined by my assessment of how flagrant your violation was, and if I feel you should have known better. Your second violation will result in a much more severe punishment, which may include a permanent ban.

I am going to assume, from here on out, that everyone has read and understood this post. Ignorance of the law will be no excuse. If you violate the spoiler rules and claim you didn't know better, that will be your problem and not mine.

You can also type your spoiler text in your post and then click the "A" icon in the tray above the message and pick the "black" color to hide the text, preceded by "Spoilers".. that's what a lot of people do to avoid the scrolling of 20 spaces for each reply.

What about older movies?

I assume this restriction only involves newer films ;p

ps: Vader is Luke's father.

Actually it's not black that should be used but #120800. Maybe Requiem can configure the board to have this color as an option in the text color panel or then just sticky a topic with the number in the title.

I think the easiest solution for that will be from now on to make two threads for each released movie.. XXX (Spoilers) and XXX (No Spoilers) for instance. It worked for Harry Potter books, it worked for a few other movies... why not for everything else?

Obviously some movies aren't really going to need that, since some movies cannot be spoiled.. such as many comedies for instance.

Trust me Runnen, no one wanted to watch Triple X, let alone spoil it.

Zing!

The funny thing is, I had pretty much the exact same discussion with some friends I was visiting over the weekend about King Kong. We were talking about spoiling movies, and how it's a little ridiculous that some people complain about having a 5 year old movie spoiled for them. So then I'm like:

"Yeah, like people bitch about being told Kong falls off the Empire State building in the end"

"What? Does he?"

"Dude, the movie is like a hundred fucking years old."

It was pretty funny.

Would be much simpler if the boards had a [spoiler] tag. There's a few different types available on the official vBulletin boards, ranging from a block of black on black text that you highlight to a more complex DHTML variant that just hides a div until you click a button. I prefer the div one, myself.

Only drawback is that the spoiler text shows up in the mouseover tooltip, but most threads don't go into spoiler territory in the first paragraph of the first post anyway.

I find this debate a little absurd though considering we have two recent examples of very well self diciplined threads mixing spoiler and non-spoiler info with the MI3 and Silent Hill topics. There is no reason to change how things were done because a single person decided to be stupid, especialy now that it is clear that being that stupid will not be tolerated.

Years ago when Titanic came out, I was at work talking to a co-worker about how the only good part of the movie was the second half when the boat sunk. Some customer overheard us talking and barked out "Thanks alot for spoiling the end of the movie, asshole!" and stormed out. I think everyone in the store bust out laughing after she left.

There's a debate here?

All I was saying is that there should be a [spoiler] tag. This is the only vB/phpBB site I frequent that hasn't added it. It's not a complicated process, Requiem's done multiple vB upgrades (the real pain in the ass when it comes to vB) so adding a new tag should take 5-10 minutes at most.

I do love the [spoiler] tag that makes the little button appear that you have to click to reveal what's inside.

Would have uses outside of here or TV House as well. Could use it in the MMO section to hide long things (ie a parsing thread, paragraph of set up, use spoiler to hide the math which is envitably 50 lines long, paragraph of conclusions drawn from said math. People who want to see the work can click on it the first time they want to read it, and have it hidden every other time they check the thread)
