| If you're encoding for personal use on a PC, HTPC, or XBMC, you shouldn't be using an ASP (Advanced Simple Protocol) codec like DivX or XviD anyway. H.264 codecs are vastly superior at the same bitrates, and there's an open source one called x.264 which is excellent, however if you have Nero 6 or 7 Ultra you're much better off using the Ateme H.264 codec that comes with it. H.264 takes a lot of decoding power, either a high end cpu or a 6600GT+ video card (or ATI equivalent) that has built-in hardware support for HD decoding. It really only applies when you start with a HD source and encode to 720p or higher resolutions. If you're just encoding to DVD quality (480i) then you'd have to have a really old computer to not be able to decode without dropping frames. ASP codecs are really only useful for people who are making avi's for use on a standalone player that supports MPEG-4. Even a xbox can handle H.264 now. Newb guides available at http://www.doom9.org as always. |
