| Lord of War I liked it, and I dislike Nicholas Cage as an actor. But maybe it was because I came into the movie expecting something bad I liked it? Thought it had a decent enough plot, and tried to keep an upbeat tempo through the semi disturbing subject matter. |

| Maybe one of the reasons it did so poorly is because their advertising gave a mixed message. From the previews it looked like it was slanting towards action/comedy but it was then called something like the "best action thriller since the Borne Identity." Now, being the next Borne Identity or Supremecy would be fine in my book, as I enjoyed them both very much, but the comparison looks ill fitting given the previews. It made me a little gunshy. All I could think of was when Species came out and it was being called the next Aliens.

| The movie was garbage. The director obviously skimmed through a Times article and took a world issue and ran with it. The characters were one dimensional and their cynical outlook seem so unfounded. It just bothered me. |

| I enjoyed it. It got depressing in a requiem for a dream sort of way; minus all the nasty drug effects. Wasn't as dark as RFAD though.

| I liked it quite a bit. It wasn't really romanticized the way Hollywood typically does in movies. Sometimes bad people really are just bad people. It doesn't end "well". I mean its satisfactory to the main character, but it doesn't generate that feel good emotion people seem to want so much. |

One of my friends suggested it got bad reviews because it was so controversial, while not sticking to either the left or the right. I can kinda see it playing out that way too. Fucking critics! |

| Some of the following are minor spoilers, feel free to ignore this post if you are bothered by that type of thing. Generally the only reviews I read are Roger Eberts. Most of the other ones I find are just people trying desperately to be funny and failing at it miserably. Anyway, one thing lacking in the movie that my girlfriend commented on was a lack of tension. I mean even the scene where Baptiste points a gun at him, you know he isn't going to die or have anything bad happen to him. I think the marketing for this movie was terrible. It really isn't a comedy. It really isn't a thriller, or an action movie, yet the various commercials portrayed it as all 3. You'd think a movie about this would have more shooting, but not so much really. What I found it to be was a story about a morally ambiguous individual, and if anything I found that appealing. The character doesn't condemn the contribution he has to violence, but at the same time doesn't pretend he has no connection to it. The scene where Baptiste comments that Cage is actually the lord of war is a rather pertinent statement about his character. |

| I thought his russian uncle dying was more depressing than if the titanic were also carrying a cargo freight of thousands of kittens and puppies. On the other hand, thinking about it some more, it was more hilarious than if the titanic were also carrying a cargo freight of thousands of kittens and puppies. | Bumping this old thread, this movie didn't as much attention as it deserved imo. It was a solid flick and an easy watch, paced extremely well and there wasn't any real dull moments. Somebody said this whole thing was written like someone had skimmed the time's article which I think is accurate and exactly what the director was going for. He made up a character that was successful at selling arms, he took a look at major conflicts in the world and asked himself "How do these people get guns?" and made that character fill the role. Drugs, guns whatever.. in the end theres a sense of moral ambiguity that a person has to have to do deal in these things, a complete lack of responsibility.. The character in this film protrays it to perfection, he's supposed to sicken us and we're supposed to sympathize with him as well. Anyways I really liked it, it's defintely got a nice overlay and it's a much different form of story telling than most people are used to. Instead of character development, he's supposed to be the window in which we see his situation and his actions. Different and well done. |
