Corpse Bride

Has anyone else seen Corpse Bride? Its out in a couple of theaters here in LA, I made that extra effort to go see it cus I knew the Harry Potter 4 trailer was running with it. The movie was actually pretty cool, though it was a bit short. There was a shit load of Warner Brothers people there when I went to see it and they were all trippin balls bout getting everyone to fill out the questionnaire bout whether the movie was good or not, sounded a bit like they may chop it up or dumb it down but with a running time of 1hr and 15 mins I don’t really see how they could pull that off.

It's only out one week early in NY/LA so there's no way they'll be changing it for wide release.

Really looking forward to the movie, I loved Nightmare Before Christmas and am hoping this movie will have the same greatness (and hopefully redeem Tim Burton's name after Willy Wonka).

You can already tell they are pushing the Nightmare Before Christmas vibe. If you watch the ads for it, the music playing is from that movie

Guarantee you this movie makes a metric shitload of cash in Japan ;p Nightmare is a huge cult film over there.

are you positive it's the same song? Danny Elfman sometimes uses very similar sounds in his scores that make me think it's from a previous film. I have a love/hate relationship with his style. It's instantly recognizable, and gives the movie a certain feel, but he re-uses a lot of things time and again.

Why in the world would Tim Burton have to redeem himself after Willy Wonka? That was an excellent movie, both critically and financially.

I'm just going to giggle when everyone hates it because it's another crappy musical, like Nightmare, with lame animation, like Nightmare. If I had gotten a survey to fill out upon seeing commercials I would say "throw out the crap, and replace it with just a long unedited single shot of Johnny Depp sitting there rambling about whatever is on his mind. He's the only reason people will see this thing anyway."

Too bad Ebert hasn't reviewed it yet. Hopefully he won't base his whole review on just the animation again. Yeah yeah, takes a stupid amount of time to make a stop-action claymation movie, but just doing something that takes an arduous amount of work and time isn't reason for unwarranted praise. Looks like they just reused the stupid Jack Skeleton and skeletal dog for johnny depp and his doggy characters...they probably spent all of tim burton's money on pot or something.

/rs I'm so goddamned tired of Johnny Depp.

I'm still looking forward to seeing it but not being able to see Burton at work without Depp is getting ridiculous. Do you suppose the studio refused to use him for Big Fish?

Now I am by no means whatsoever a defender of Tim Burton movies lately (in fact I don't have much interest in The Corpse Bride but I'm sure Hot Topic does), but come on. What warrants being called good animation to you? Did you have a problem with timing, movement, expression, what? Unwarranted praise is annoying and all, but it sounds like your problems with it are personal. Nightmare Before Christmas was well animated by pretty much any objective standard, it didn't just "take a long time."

And for the record, claymation is a form of stop motion animation. Neither Nightmare Before Christmas nor The Corpse Bride are claymation.

Right. Claymation is what Wallace and Gromit are.

Just saw it, I thought it was really enjoyable. Of course it's no Nightmare Before Christmas, however it was really well done. Most of the comedy is really well done.

I thought Nightmare was simply written by Burton, and overlooked by him,but that the direction and overall handling of the movie was done by someone else?

As far as I knew the Corpse bride was exciting for him because it was his movie and not someone else doing and interpration of his work.

I'm just going to throw this out there, but wasn't that movie aimed at ~8-year-olds?

He produced Nightmare Before Christmas and came up with the idea and the main characters. Henry Selick directed it and Danny Elfman wrote the music (a decent portion of the script). It wouldn't have been made without Burton's influence and inspiration, and for that he deserves credit, but a lot of talented people made that movie happen that seem to get the shaft in terms of recognition.

Now, The Corpse Bride looks fine technically, and Henry Selick is on board for animation I believe, but god does it look terrible beyond that. It's the least original thing he could possibly do beyond another remake. It's so cookie-cutter in every way for 14-year-old girls and guys who are trying to be those girl's boyfriends. It's sickening, and maybe I'm wrong to let that effect how much I'll enjoy it, but I know it will.

Burton has lost almost all of my respect in the last few years and I don't see this movie changing my opinion. It's a shame though, he's made some excellent movies.

I don't think Selick had anything to do with Corpse Bride. He's working on Neil Gaiman's Coraline now.

As far as Corpse Bride goes, the only thing that really pisses me off is that this movie gets all the attention and yet Mirrormask, which is almost certainly a superior movie (Tim Burton is talented, but he's not even remotely in the ballpark of Gaiman & McKean) gets jackshit for theatrical release. I can't believe that Henson studios doesn't have enough pull to get a major release if they really wanted it.

I'm still going to go see Corpse Bride today though.
