Kevin Smith

Because I am a glutton for punishment I have decided to pose this question here because with the exception of a few specific goofy "anime-obsessed-chowder heads-who-use-a-fucking-annoying-font" your movie opinions are usually pretty reliable. Could someone please explain to me what talent Kevin Smith possesses other than writing decent dialogue and capitolizing on his substantial fan base by whoring stuff on his website and comic shop.

Many of my friends laud him with praise that I just never understood why. His movies aren't bad but they are hardly important unless you count "Clerks" if only for it's effect on the new independent film wave of the early nineties. I have nothing against the guy personally but I just don't get it.

He's kind of a one-trick pony. All of his movies since Clerks feel like "Clerks With a Larger Budget" to me.

I really, really, really, really hope that you don't actually think that is what a good film maker is determined by. If that's the case then I will make a movie in a bathroom and by your logic I will be halfway my own Citizen Kane.

He's ok in my book, he did give us Jay and Silent Bob. For that I will always be thankful.

Kevin Smith has a keen eye when it comes to realistic relationships in his films. He doesnt give the typical Hollywood BS spin. In hollywood, its boy meets girl, boy loses girl and boy gets girl back. In a kevin smith film its boy starts out with girl, boy loses girl, boy might get her back and then boy loses girl again becuase boy is in idiot. You dont know how his films will end its not pre-determined to be a happy ending becuase life doesnt work out that way. I know this kind of film turns off a lot of women and some men. Clerks is probably his best film in that regard. The other stuff with J&SB is comic relief between the serious relationship stuff thats going on. May i recommend you rent An Evening with Kevin Smith. its a 4 hour live show of Smith taking questions from college students and explaining why he makes his films the way he does. There are many funny anecdotes along the way.

Rent it, all questions will be answered.

I dunno, I don't think he's "Great".

I did love Mallrats, and I'm in love with Brodie.

Chasing Amy was very enjoyable, just the right blend of drama and comedy.

Dogma was VERY original imo.

He's got a good sense of humor for the most part. I've only seen Clerks through Jay and Silent Bob, but they all were pretty good flicks or made me laugh.

Smith is ok but I dont understand the ball-chugging that goes on over his films too. They're ok, but they all feel the exact same to me.

Entertaining movies in general with your slice of drama in between the Jay and Silent Bob fart jokes. I don't think all of his movies are great though I do have a copy of Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back sitting next to me now. There is a moment in each of his movies where suddenly BAM I feel connected in some way. The rest of the movie might be utter crap but for that one scene I feel as though someone else feels or has felt the same thing as me. There are some pop culture references splattered throughout and well, let's face it - there are a lot of comic book loving, moronic, dope smoking, suburbanites out there that identify with his characters.

You wouldn't know logic if it bit you in the ass.

Look at the quality of the film that was made considering the budget. That is the point that was being made.

He is an everyman. Not really eccentric like many film makers, and not so seemingly absorbed into the studio aspects of it all.

I don't think it's so much of him being a great film maker, and more that the common person can see him in an interview or whatever and say hey,I know that guy.He has also gone along way to making it cool to be a geek. The guy is a huge geek and people love him, this has in turn made other geeks cool to which has earned him alot of respect.

When I see a Kevin Smith movie is comingout,I know I will like it simply because he is my kind of guy,I enjoy his humour and I enjoy his drama.Doesn't mean I think he is a fantastic filmaker, just that he is easy to identify with if you enjoy his types of films. He is a very bankable creator in that respect.

Not much of any talent aside from the great(not decent=P) dialogue/banter. And a good sense of humor. But that's enough most of the time.

Until that fucking Jersey Girl.....which even had it's bright points. But was overall a turd of a film.

Dogma was an awesome movie. Of all his work, I think that I enjoyed Dogma the most, with Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob in a close tie for second. I didn't even mind Jersey Girl that much. I agree with everyone that says he isn't your regular run of the mill hollywood director. Shit, he is doing a sequel to Clerks just because the actor that plays Jay stayed clean for more the a year, or some timeframe like that.
