Chronicles of Riddick - DVD- Unrated, Director's Cut

I bumped the old thread but it contained a lot of spoilers. Just wanted to start a new thread to let everyone know that the DVD release is an unrated, director's cut. I did not see the theatrical version so I can't list the differences, but I've been told by friends who have seen both that there are quite a few additional scenes that help explain things.

I loved it; and watched PB last weekend for a refresh in anticipation of RoC's dvd release. Check it out if you get a chance, it's an excellent rental. If you loved it, like me, buy a copy. Twohy recently said in an interview that the movie studio bean counters are watching this dvd release very closely. If it doesn't sell well, they may not greenlight the next installment since it didn't do very well in the theaters.

DVD Unrated version added in a whole lot of scenes, although some of them you could see why they were cut or trimmed for continuity's sake in the theaters. Biggest addition is all the Furion stuff we saw in the commercials for the movie way way back before the movie hit theaters but never got to see.

The changes however bring up some complaints on my part, these extra 15 minutes weren't "additional footage" it changed the whole meaning of the story. If I knew they were going to leave out all the parts of the story I wouldn't have even bothered to watch it in the theaters and just waited for the DVD. Also, although I like the DVD version a lot better, they cut off the whole ending. The one in the theater wasn't spectacular, but when you add in a whole bunch of new plot footage I would expect that to change the outcome. Instead it's just climax "and I'm spent". Wonder how much longer that big blue energy bomb can hover over the planet before someone notices it... hmmmm. Oh well, still a great movie, it just suffers from the FF7 complex.

never saw it in the theater, but got the dvd today. i liked PB. very diff story, but had the same feel.

it was a great movie to show off 5.1 speakers, lots of detail in where the sound came from. probably the best movie in my collection for that.

The added Furion stuff greatly improved the coherence of the movie. I, for one, was very confused when they left Riddick for dead on the desert planet in the theatrical release (and made no attempt to shoot him) but the director's cut has a gigantic energy blast explain that little hole.

Also, perhaps they cut out the ending because they want you to think the planet was in fact destroyed.

It looks really terrible to me. Plus Vin Diesel is just about the shittiest "action star" ever and I've yet to see a movie he is in that was remotely interesting.

Is this really worth renting?

Riddick

Rent Pitch Black, if you like the Riddick character then rent Chronicles.

Deisel may be a subpar action star, but he can act (Private Ryan and I believe it was Boiler Room). The problem tries to make every one of his action characters cooler than Riddick, and they always just fall flat on their face. That and he just plain grabs stupid action roles. I'm sorry, but there is no action star who could have made XXX entertaining.

Yeah him and Van Damme are pretty high up on the crap list for action stars.

Also, who was he in Saving Private Ryan? I've seen the movie just can't place him.

IMDB lists him as "Pvt. Adrian Caparzo" but I have nfi idea which character that is either. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but I'm *pretty* sure it's not a character that's part of Tom Hanks squad.

Cheers,

Sorran.

Yeah he is, he's the big italian dude. He dies relatively early in the movie, he's the one who guys to take the little girl from the French family, then gets shot and left in the open by the german sniper to draw the rest out. Pretty sure he just bleeds to death there. Pretty small role, and just about anyone could have played it really. I don't really care either way about him, I think he's just picked a few pretty shitty large movies to be in, some of the lesser known stuff I have heard is alright.

I couldnt lump Vin Diesel in the same cat with van Dam. diesel at least can act...Van dam was retarded.

I can tolerate most of Vins movies. Knockaround Guys was alright. Pitch Black was his best i think though. then Fast and the Furious.

He was fantastic in the Riddick game on xbox. Suburb game.

He is a HUGE gamer. The xbox game was produced by his own company Tigon. He even has a tatto on his arm of his favorite D&D character he used to play. So not only is he a lady killer but complete game geek like us.

ya the Riddick game was fucking awesome....i really liked Chronicles (movie) alot more then i did Pitch Black.

Diesel does make bad choices in movies for sure XXX was flat out retarded minus the fuckin bad ass GTO. He really should imo do alot more serious roles and less pure action ones he is a good actor but ends up in bad action flicks with horribly cheesy catch phrases.

all in all if you like sci fi - action then you should like this movie, if you dont like sci-fi you wont most likely it has a very old school sci-fi theme to it with the Necromongers.
