Check out the Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson. The first one is called Red Mars. It can get a little dry from time to time but I found it to be good science fiction.

Does it pick up in the middle at all?
He blows a load on a chick's face at some point (maybe several points). That count as a 'pick me up'? I enjoyed the book, just need to get around to getting the rest of the series.

Altered Carbon definitely picks up the pace soon. Stick with it Seventh.

I read the first couple books of the Mars series you mentioned Magic. I enjoyed the first book for the most part but there definitely were slow parts. The second book from what I remember was just 1 big slow part and I never was able to bring myself to read the third book. Maybe it got better? I'd consider them a realistic kind of fantasy. (Just a trip a few years into the future with slightly better technology than we have now.)

i've heard pretty bad things about the rainbow mars series of books, but i've never read them for myself.

I have read one short story of his, "A History of the 20th Century, with Illustrations", and it was pretty decent. Not really Science Fiction, but not bad. Didn't make me want to read more stuff by him though.

As a Firefly and Serenity fan, I would recommend C J Cherryh one of the finest writers SF has to offer!

Her space opera titles covering The Company Wars illustrate a future deeply rooted in our present, detailing how huge Earth companies fail to deal with the time lag of its colonies from our own miner belts to far flung stars and the ensuing wars. These books cover many hundreds of years and are all stand alone titles but a good place to start would be :

Hellburner and its sequel Heavy Time by C J Cherryh.

Holy shit, yeah it does. I'm about 3/4 of the way through. Fucking crazy interrogation scene.

It stayed pretty slow to be honest and it took me a long time to finish the series heheh. I just liked the setting and the how it is something that definitely is possible. A friend of mine is convinced it would make a great backdrop for a MMO.

Finished it last night, definitely will pick up the sequel. Thanks (whoever that was) for the recommendation.

Probably half the SF readership on the board. Morgan seems to be one of (if not _the_) most popular SF authors on the board. He's really, really good. Try Thirteen (US) / Black Man (EU) afterward.

Glad you liked it. The story of the first 100 and developing a new civilization is pretty cool.

I just finished 3 of Vernor Vinge's more popular books.

A fire upon the deep
A deepness in the sky
Rainbow's End

Enjoyed all 3 immensely. One particular technology that I like that he uses frequently is "wearable" computers with HUDs. Can't wait for us to actually get to that point in real life.
