It's a toughie. I had to decide between Alex from A Clockwork Orange or Patrick Bateman from American Psycho...

Ended up with Bateman. I love his snide attitude and how Ellis used him to describe nearly every detail of his day to day surroundings.

Zedd was pretty sick. I used to laugh out loud so many times because of that classic character.

Spoiler:
When he made the whole town think he made their nuts disappear was classic.

I still got to stick with Richard and Kahlan. Richard just because he was the perfect protagonist and he was a very believable character.

Kahlan just because she was just such a badass character. Moments in Stone of Tears was crazy.

I agree with Kalahn. I liked Nicci better than her though. And Cara/Denna for that matter. Those books had so many memorable female badasses.

Eglan and Ulic (sp?) were badasses too in (I think Blood of the Fold) when one of them cleaved a fucking horse down with an axe for talking shit to the Lord Rahl.

Kahlan's Confessor power was so remarkably badass. It had so much potential that I don't think Terry Goodkind ever capitalized on.

Elric of Melnibone. He is just so exactly the opposite of everything you expect from a hero.

Gerald Tarrant///The Coldfire Trilogy--As said before, just the perfect Anti Hero in my eyes.

Silk/(Bel)Garion///The Belgariad/Mallorean--Again as said above, Silk was just a character that had so much more depth hinted at, his quick wit was something I loved and it was these series that got me into Fantasy. Garion I liked simply because he was the first "fantasy hero" I read about, I loved the books and character so much I named my son Garion.

Simon(Seoman)///Memory, Sorry and Thorn--This was the first character in a book series I read where I actually felt I was watching a child turn into a man and hero, Williams did such a fantastic job making you care about all his characters this series remains my favorite epic fantasy series to date.

Most have been previously mentioned:

Hannibal Lecter
Roland the Gunslinger
Artemis Entreri from R.A. Salvatore's books
Lestat from Anne Rice's books
Gatsby
Wolfgang Kies (sort of obscure character in several Shadowrun books by Michael A. Stackpole)
Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

And an old nostalgic favorite from my childhood: Joe Hardy from the Hardy Boys

Hercule Poirot

I wonder how many people on this board don't know who's book he is from.

Well he was in multiple books and short stories so not really sure what your question pertains to.

I'll toss in a vote for Kheldar(Silk) as well. I like Zedd too, he was awesome, but Richard was one of the most annoying characters as well.

I am reading Midnight Tides now and I can see the whole Bugg character thing. Whenever I get to a section with them in it I tend to read a little bit longer.

Tyrion Lannister - for beating the odds with the entire world against him.
Jamie Lannister - for making you able to hate him and cheer for him almost at the same time.
Rand - only when absolutely no women are around, then he becomes the ultimate badass.
Roland of Gilead - for being a cold badass motherfucker with no remose.
Lord Voldemort - funny enough, I like his character more because of what he did BEFORE the books happen. I just loved the "evil emperor" vibe that emanated from him when he was rising to power and came back to Hogwarts to ask Dumbledore to become a teacher (in one of the "memories flashbacks"). I hope those scenes are in the upcoming movie.

As well as quite some filmatizations of the actual novels.
