I think it was Batman, i can't remember if it was a comic or an episode? Not even sure it was even Batman? there was a sequence where Bruce (or whoever) went out and joined some street gang and traveled around learning about criminals. He was eventually caught stealing shipments from his own company (I think it was Wayne Enterprises)

and no, it wasn't the abyss special edition.

He did this in Batman Begins. You might also want to look at early issues of Legends of the Dark Knight. As far as joining games, both Nightwing and the current Robin did so for a little while.

batman begins setup is like this.

bruce goes traveling with no money etc, steals and stuff til arrested, goes to jail then gets freed by lliam neelson's character..he gets trained by his group, then leaves and becomes batman.
