Batman to be Killed?

DC is throwing a ton of innuendo that Batman is going to die this year (and be replaced). I have a hard time believing they'll kill him off, considering he is a big cash cow for them. I'd imagine that the original Robin (Dick Grayson) who is now Nightwing would be the logical choice.

Are you ready for "Batman R.I.P."?

Beginning the epic story that will change the legend of the Dark Knight forever! Everything in Grant Morrison's groundbreaking run on Batman has been leading to this story, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Who will live? Who will die? Who will be Batman? The answers are sure to shock you in "Batman R.I.P.," featuring artwork by Tony Daniel and Sandu Florea and covers by Alex Ross.

This is why I don't read comics. Haven't they already killed him like 50 thousand times? Or broken his back and had him replaced? Shit, I thought the comic Batman was on about his 20th iteration, at least.

I for one would be massively pissed.

Sorry if the industry is struggling in the comics arena, but considering the success of the movie franchise right now this would be one of the worst possible decisions unless they have him use a Lazarus Pit.

Immortal Batman = win.

Bruce Wayne, like Tony Stark or Peter Parker, is a backbone for the character.

First of all, stop your crying everybody. It isn't going to be another "Death of Superman" thing. They aren't "killing" Batman. This is a six part series in which some major changes are going to be made.

It'll probably be a mix of the elements of the broken back and Bruce Wayne - Fugitive but with actual lasting consequences. Neither of those storylines did and that is a bit of a shame.

I would expect something like the Batman R.I.P. meaning the idea/legend of Batman would die. It would be figurative instead of literal and Bruce Wayne would do take a different role or become a different hero or something.

This sounds pretty similar to the Capt. America storyline with the rogue and brooding Bucky taking over. I hope DC has more creativity than to copy a Marvel idea less than a year after it hit shelves.

It's still a little early to tell in the current Capt. America storyline, but for right now the writing is so amazing that I don't miss Steve Rogers that much. The fact that the men behind the mask represent an ideal, as Bruce Wayne said in Batman Begins, the ideal can never be killed even if the men can. Bucky is carrying the legacy that Rogers laid down, and isn't compromising it even if his reasons for fighting are different than Rogers. Of course the character will change, but probably just as much as if a writer changed something like making Peter having never married MJ, or changing Hank Pym from Ant Man to Giant Man to Yellowjacket.

More likely, looking at the cover of a future issue, something a little less extreme than death looks more likely:

Or he falls in love and becomes rainbowman?

The fact that the picture of Bruce Wayne kissing the woman is tearing the picture of Batman in half leads me to conclude that Bruce Wayne will meet a woman and fall in love with her, but realizes that he can no longer be Batman if he wants to be there for her (or because he'd rather break a hip having acrobatic sex than falling off a rooftop) and so he is torn between ending Batman and keeping his blue balls.

So he is going to Retire and train a Successor? That could work, Bruce can still be a mentor when needed.

I hope it is more complicated than a love interest because it is something we've seen multiple times.

Him falling in love and her getting killed and him going insane, killing someone, and deciding he cannot be Batman anymore because he took a life would be more interesting.
