| admittedly I stopped reading right after his "analogy." Way to introduce your example so people don't think you're a complete idiot and stop reading, OSC. Ender's Game is still terrible, and he's still a bad writer. Seriously the whole point of the book is: "haha you got tricked" and its so up its ass about its own message of moral relativism in war that a child could easily see the point that he's making. Oh wait, it is a book for children. And so is the Harry Potter series. Neither series represents a substantial achievement in literature, as popular as they may be. And you guys can argue all you want about whether someone "should" be able to write a lexicon about copywrited characters, but it comes down to legality. Anyway, who would you rather get the money for publishing a lexicon, some random author trying to make some cash of someone else's work or the author of the series who will probably just give the money to charity anyway. But you guys are missing the point here. The real issue is why OSC is so self-important that he thinks he can give his opinion on a case that has literally zero connection to him. "I'm an author, my views matter." If you're a mediocre author, does that mean that your views are mediocre? Last edited by Etwynn : 05-03-2008 at 02:25 AM. |

| A. What exactly do you know about the mormon religion? I really don't want to get into an OT debate, but I'd like to see if you're just criticizing me because you've been brainwashed into believe that "you should be tolerant of someone else's religion" even if you have no conception of it. Relax, it's not like I don't have equally strong complaints against other world religions. B. I'm ignorant because I don't like what you like? I can have negative opinions if I dislike something based on its merits and I can have harshly negative views if I really think something is full of shit. That doesn't make me ignorant, it just means I have a different opinion than you. Sure, Ender's Game is a fun read but it's definately the fucking jesus of scifi like you all are making it out to be. And there's a big difference between a website and a published book. I shouldn't have to spell it out. |

+4 Internets | How is there a difference between a website and a book? Don't both things make money off intellectual property? And what makes this book different than the hordes of other books out there referencing fiction? |

| Yea, that is what I took away from it. I know plenty of gay guys that you would NEVER suspect if not for their more obvious partners, so I don't know what to think these days, but I figured that was the way of things in Ice and Fire. |

| I live in Utah which is 70%+ Mormon. I have lived here for years and all I have seen from them is that they are extremely kind and helpful people. Not choosing to believe what they do is obviously a personal choice but calling them almost a cult is extremely ignorant. Tome Cruise and his minions are a cult, mormons are just pretty average followers of jesus. I am going to assume you are referring to Warren Jeffs and those people which are NOT mormon. They are FLDS which is a completely different thing and yes I would consider them a cult. So you ask me what I know about mormons and I can safely say a shit load more then you do.. obviously. +4 Internets | A friend of mine from back in the MMO days was Mormon. Yeah he has whacky religious beliefs but honestly, I'm jealous of him. He's got a smoking hot wife and new son that he is totally devoted to, he has never had a drop of alcohol or a drug in his life, and his son will be the same, and will go to a nice school like he did and have a good life. Really, of all the things to get upset about, the Mormon lifestyle is really just not one of the things I would pick. |

+1 Internets | Actually there are a bunch of folks here who would be surprised at who is Mormon, if they write off every LDS member as a cult follower. Lifelong LDS member here. Went to Sao Paulo, Brasil for my mission. Returned, got my bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering, at USU, then my bachelor's in Film at NYU. Currently working for Hollywood. If we were all religious kooks, I doubt I'd be comfortable in the job I am in, or going to school where I went. I am saddened by the ignorance of the general populace, and pleased by the individuals who seek to learn more about their neighbors, be they LDS, muslim, Hindi, or any other faith not well known here in the States. Back on topic. OSC's books were entertaining. Ender's Game was a groundbreaking science fiction story, and rightly so, during its time. Today, we can all critique and pan it, but when it was released, its content and manner were excessively rare finds. I can agree with his opinion of Rowling, because I have met her. She has her successed: She's conquered excessive personal wealth. She has adoring fans. But she seeks after a critical recognition that she is not yet deserving of (and I say this, having read all of Harry Potter). She comes off extremely arrogant (chokingly so), is a diva, and offscreen is somewhat crass. Maybe critical recognition will come with future works, but her current attitude of approach and grace are lacking. Last edited by Madrugan : 05-04-2008 at 01:43 AM. |
