Just purchased Night of Knives by Ian Esselmont and The Terror by Dan Simmons (thanks to that Drood thread). Currently reading through The Terror first. I'm about half way through it now and some strange shit is going on. Very interesting and enjoyable read.

Just finished Amazon.com: The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit: David Eddings: Books and I am starting Amazon.com: The Malloreon, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Guardians of the West, King of the Murgos, Demon Lord of Karanda: David Eddings: Books.

Excellent book series!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I was surprised and delighted to see how well David Eddings writes his characters. Garion actually grows as the story progresses and those moral issues which we inevitably see in every fantasy book, actually grow with him. Instead of the innocent boy who can never do anything which might be consider evil/bad/gray area in a stressful situation, we see a boy goes through those delimmeas and learns that life is not always a straight line and sometimes having to kill or be killed is just the way it works.

In modern fantasy involving children as main characters it seems more often then not they are little whiny bitches who refuse to step off their moral high chair in light of reality. This is not the case in these books.

The books all seem to go by very fast and often I wish there was more but I would rather wish there was more then read 50 more pages of boring filler and these books don't have much of that.

Overall I'm very happy with the series and glad to see the main character grow up and past their moral highground and into adulthood. Hard to find fantasy books where people do that these days.

Started it yesterday, finished it today. I really enjoyed the shit out of it from start to finish. What I wrote elsewhere, not really a spoiler just done for space.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The chapters alternate between two POV's, both told in the first person.

Doctor Impossible is the smartest man on Earth. He also "suffers" from "Malign Hypercognition Disorder", or "evil genius" syndrome.

Fatale is a young woman who was in a horrific accident in Brazil and was selected to have some very advanced machines and weaponry grafted to her that would keep her alive and make her "The Next Stage in Warfare". She's a hero who has just been recruited to join the top super team out there.

It's all really good, but I simply could not get enough of the Doctor Impossible chapters. The insight in to why someone would choose to be evil. His motivations. Vague allusions to his previous attempts to take over the world. And just his constant belief that he will, in fact, win in the end. All delivered with absolute deadpan certainty.

The Fatale chapters are more interesting for how they delve in to the history of the heroes of this world and humanize the current crop.

Her chapters are nothing amazingly new to folks who have been reading comics for awhile, but the Impossible ones are. The total package comes together amazingly well with some really nice twists thrown in for good measure.

I just picked up Night Watch and The Darkness That Comes Before. I also have Mistborn and Reaper's Gale sitting on my shelf while I finish Consider Phlebas. Hmm what to read next. I'm not sure if I'm ready for another epic Malazan book yet so I'll probably read one of the other three first then knock out Reaper's Gale.

Dragonseed by Maxey (third novel in the Dragon Age trilogy--not really great literature I just like the idea of a future where one set of humans are barely better than apes, the others are gods that could give a shit, and genetically created Dragons rule most of the world.)

The Sword-Edged Blonde by Bledsoe (I really don't know what this guy was going for, its a mix of detective novel and fantasy novel but instead of mixing them together well he just pulped it out into a bastard mix that really wasn't anything but kinda stupid)

The Patriot Witch by Finlay (Witches during the Revolutionary War, Del Rey is releasing them one after another similar to how they launch Naomi Novik's "His Majesty's Dragon" but its not even as good as that was--forgettable)

Empire in Black and Gold by Tchahkowsky(sp) (fantasy debut set in a world where everyone has "magic" abilities related to bugs. So like Mantis-kindred are badass fighters, Beetle-kindred are good workers and make machines, ants are warriors with psychic links, etc. Revolves around the Wasp Empire deciding it should take a bunch of other people out. Pretty mundane fantasy plot but the world building kept me reading...still such a neat idea and basically what happened was that you ended up with a different name for fantasy archetypes. Wasps = human empire, beetle/ants = gnomes/dwarfs mix, spiders = dark elfs, mantis = high elfs. Bit of a waste.)

Can any1 recommend the rest of the books in Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series after the first book?

I read the original Rev Space book and liked it, but I havent picked up the next ones yet (Chasm City and some others). Reynold's universe is pretty deep and engrossing, and it seems as though the Mass Effect universe slightly bit his whole "superior beings wiping out other sentient beings" shtick.

Also, can any1 recommend Do Androids Dream of Eletric Sheep? I heard some mixed reviews on it, and Im not sure whether I should bother grabbing that or just cop Altered Carbon, considering I havent touched that yet.

Does "cop Altered Carbon" mean you haven't read it yet? If so read it. Now. Yes right now.

Yeah, sorry for the ghetto slang yo. Cop = buy.

Anyways, I havent read it yet, and everyone here has given it rave reviews, meaning I should probably go buy it today. I was just on the fence about Electric Sheep, which i heard was the foundation for BladeRunner.

Just picked up Elantris and the first Mistborn book, half out of curiosity about Brandon Sanderson, and half because I was just out of books I hadn't read. Started with Elantris, and so far I am not at all disappointed.

Snuff is by far his worst book, imo. You'll have to tell me what you think.

I hated Snuff, I didn't even finish it. It felt like Chuck was making fun of me with that book. It kind of pissed me off, and I still haven't bought Pygmy. This coming from someone who LOVED all of his other books, even Lullaby and Diary.

He kinda reminds me of an author version of Tarantino in the sense that he's lately been writing books to fancy himself. I love Tarantino though and Chuck as well but Snuff was just terrible. Pygmy looks amusing but seems like it would take loads of rereading just to understand what the hell he's talking about. It's on my list but not in any rush to read it.
