I actually figured that Jordan would do 3 more books myself, so this sounds about right.

It's probably better with it being 3 books assuming the majority of the various subplots get fleshed out and wrapped up. I just hope it's done well.

I was kind of surprised by all the talk of 'one book' to be honest. I mean I haven't read the series in a long time, but from what I remember when I read book 11, things didn't seem even close to winding down. It felt like the story still had quite a while to go, there was no buildup to some climax.

Because one of Jordan's dying promises was that it would be one novel no matter the size.

I'm fine with it being split into two if its done so because of the impossibility of binding something to the size of 750k words. But 750k can easily be broken down into two volumes, making it into 3 is just so you get that extra 30 bucks from the fan. Its not like you're getting extra content. Its just 3 600 page novels instead of two 900 pagers.

I'm more inclined to think that they've had to expand it out because they literally can't fit everything that needs to happen into less than three books. I know people love to blame the greedy publishers and whatnot, but from the state the series was in when he died, I just don't think that sticking to that original plan is feasable.

If Jordan wanted to end the series with one more novel he should have finished the series instead of stopping to write the fucking prequel.

From what I remember, he wasn't diagnosed with his blood disease until after the prequel. I might be getting my facts wrong, but I seem to remember him being diagnosed directly after he released the most recent book. After that, he promised that he would finish the series, no matter what. He quickly got worse and spent most of his time unable to write and made the announcement that he would be finishing the series in 1 book, as opposed to the former plan of 3. Then he died.

The prequel came out around 2 years prior to his diagnosis, but I was more referring to the rate at which he was releasing his novels. He started averaging 2+ years per book and was 57 years old when book 11 was released. Even at that time he was saying that there could be 3 more books.

That would make him at least 63 when finishing (assuming he didn't slow down to 2.5 or 3 years per book), which isn't really old, but when I met him back in 2004/2005, he wasn't what I would call the picture of health. Even then I was half expecting that he wouldn't live to finish his work.

He only started saying the "one more book" thing after it became apparent he would croak in a year. Prior to that, he was definitely talking about at least 14 books total in the series.

Shit, why buy it on release? All WoT books are remaindered for $8 in hardcover within a year, and we've got another two years before the final part is available.

Its not all written yet either so color me pessimistic about them keeping to the dates they've set up on books 2 and 3. This kind of "must publish a book to appease the fans" thinking is how we got Crossroads of Twilight.

Pat's Fantasy Hotlist

One of the premier fantasy bloggers is pretty pissed about it. I didn't read it (WoT doesn't really interest me) but I figured some people here might be interested.

The funny thing is that the angry 'THIS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE OF ALL TRUE FANS' crowd will all buy the books the day they come out. The people they piss off with this will buy anyway, and the rest don't care. Sounds like a win/win
