You could try Ninja by Eric Van Lustbader. It's about a half Asian half Caucasian martial arts ninja. If you like this first book there are a few more in the series.

It's around 500 pages but I really loved these books.

*edit* This is not in a fantasy world but modern day life. (more or less)

Just be aware if you start the Brust books, that at some point Vlad stops being an assassin.

For a non-fiction title I'd highly recommend Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills by Charles W. Henderson. It's essentially an autobiography of Carlos Hathcock that focuses on his service as a sniper during the Vietnam War.

love the taltos series.

as per the magic, magic is "HEAVY" in this world- everyone has it -except easterners who are not citizens of the empire- due to their connection to the orb. connection to the orb= you can do magic. some easterners- and some "elves" can do witchcraft.

Death- if you have the money - can be nonperm(provided you get to corpse in time/precautions have not been taken)

magic
soul-eater
GREAT WEAPONS

there are umm 12? great weapons and 3 of vlad's friends have them (do not piss off someone with a Great Weapon)

really good characters and plots.
