Whatever the 4th really did to defeat the Nine Tails and presumably Madara, was probably fuckin brilliant. Only downside, it cost him his life =p

I was always under the assumption that the Fourth used the technique the Third used on Orochimaru, back when those two had the fight on the roof when the Sand Village and others invaded Konoha. (Third didn't succeed it fully due to his injuries but obviously took atleast Orochimaru's arms resulting in him being out of the game for quite a while.)

The technique requires the sacrifice of the user itself though, where the user and whoever is "consumed" will die and forever struggle in the stomach of that Death God or whatever it is. In the case of Naruto, the Fourth and the Nine-Tails, it would seem that it - somehow due to the excessive powers of the Nine-Tails, required a temporal seal as well, being Naruto and still the sacrifice of the Fourth of course.

But I could be wrong. And it was just until a few recent chapters that they mentioned that Naruto was in fact the outcome of the Fourth - I don't think they mentioned that before? But then again I never read the mangas from the start. Only watched the anime. Got too impatient with Shippudden and decided to read up until from where the anime stopped.

Itachi referred to Naruto as the "Fourth's Legacy", but other than that it was always speculation. It wasn't truly revealed until the conversation between Tsunade and Jiraiya. People kept saying there was a resemblance and then the passing of the techniques, but there was a counter-argument as to why Naruto would be treated as an outcast then if his father was such a hero.

As far as the sealing techniques, it may not have been the exact same jutsu but it was along the same lines: A forbidden technique which was not to be used because it took the shinobi's life. I just dont understand how he could do all that in the matter of time it took to perform the jutsu. Sacrifice himself, separate the Kyuubi's chakra, seal part of it in Naruto and give the other half to some frog and inform Jiraiya of what he was doing. Unless he knew the attack was coming...

We don't know what the Third was doing during the wars. Since the Third knew the technique, it's possible he assisted the Fourth in performing it.

As we seem to enter a flashback sasuke passes out
目覚めると拘束されていた
waking up, sasuke finds himself tied up
そしてマダラが木の葉からの任務だと教える(話の流れから木の葉を抜けるのも任務の内か？)
マダラ「それが真実への入り口だ」「イタチの話をするには木の葉創立の時代に話をさかのぼらな ければならな い」

Then Madara tells him about a mission from Konoha (it seems that leaving konoha was also part of his mission)
Madara: That's the 'beginning' of the truth. In order to tell you about Itachi I first must tell you about the creation of konoha
マダラ「イタチは犠牲になったのだ」「そもそも木の葉隠れには生まれた時から問題がある。それ がイタチの生 きざまを決めた」「少し長い話になるが話すことはすべて真実だ」 .生きざま
信用出来ないと、証拠を出せとサスケは言うが最後は「話せ」と言う
Madara: Itachi became a sacrifice, ever since he was born in konoha there was a problem. Itachi's way of living decided that. This will be a long story but it will be the truth.
Sasuke says he can't trust madara and to show him some proof. At the end he says 'tell me'

回想と言うか思いで話のような物に突入
Flashback or kind of a remembered story type thing.

その時代の戦争の仕方を話自分の話をするマダラ
ちなみに初代火影は千手一族と言う木を使う一族 火影
そして最後にマダラが初代を忍の頂点であり憧れだったと話す
Madara talks about the warring period
By the way, shodai was from 1,000 hands clan that used wood jutsu.
then Madara talks about how he admired shodai who was tehe pinacle of a ninja.

Madara: The Nine Tails’ power is extraordinary. If we were to control it, we would have become a threat such as to eclipse any natural disaster

Zetsu: You haven’t been keeping a close eye on them, have you? For all we know, the Nine Tails jinchuuriki has already been killed.
Madara: Seems like someone’s butting in…Sasuke, we’ll talk about all this later. For now, you should sleep a bit and recover from your injuries.

Questions:

Is Madara lying?

If not...
Why did Konoha allow Sasuke to live, and under the impression that Itachi was so evil?


My guess is that they were planning on tearing it up with the Kyubi again, but I have nfc why Sasuke was spared. They really created a lot of holes to fill in the next few chapters.

Well.. a half-explanation would be that Sasuke had zero knowledge of what the sharingan could really do. He wasn't a threat because he didn't know about all his potential. Not until he saw Itachi again. Konoha was under the impression that Itachi was evil because only 4 people knew the truth. I don't think the 3rd ever spoke about Itachi, and Tsunade doesn't know about it.

But to say that Sasuke wasn't a threat because of ignorance of his own abilities, would also mean that no other Uchiha child was a threat - so why kill them too? Perhaps because if every one of them lived, they'd be angry and dangerous as a whole?

I am a big fan of backstory. In hind sight, I'm not really upset anymore about Itachi being a good guy. People have been guessing that's the case for years.

Maybe Itachi told the people he didn't want to kill Sasuke and knew he had the potential? Because during Sasuke's backstory, it's always shown him being outperformed in every way by Itachi.
