The Realm of Algebra by Isaac Asimov

Lately I've been wanting to brush up on my elementary math. I've heard good things about this book- unfortunately I can't seem to find it anywhere. Amazon has it on sale used for $50(~150 pages, paperback). I don't mind buying it, but I would like to read a chapter or two before plunking down the cash.

Has anyone read this book? How did you like it?

Since no one has heard of this book....

Can anyone recommend a book for developing a good foundation for mathematics- specifically applied to the realm of computer science?

I really want to start at the bottom and work my way up. I'm not a total novice but sometimes I get the feeling I learned math the wrong way early on. Basically I want to learn new paradigms of mathematical thought (if that makes sense) that I can build on.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't read this book, but I would love to. Asimov was a brilliant writer and published many solid books in every category of the dewey decimal system.

I wouldn't hesitate to get it. If you don't like it, I'll personally buy it from you, guaranteed.

Developing a good understanding of mathematics, in my opinion, isn't so much about the teaching material, but about the attitude. If you really want to cultivate mathematical understanding, the motivation should be enough to make it happen; just go back as far as you feel inclined to and use whatever textbooks or material you can find, but resolve yourself to understand what the hell it is you're learning before you move on. Really.

Go to the library. Look for the teacher's edition of some math books.
