| BUBBLES THE MONKEY!!! | Goldman's buying right to OJ book and renaming it http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_6290012 Saw it on Fox News at work and figured I wanted to see if there was more to it. While I never condoned OJ putting the book out, this is really a shitty thing to do (I'm pretty sure they can't do it and in fact OJ could probably turn around and sue them for defamation of character since he was found not guilty). Whether or not he's guilty isn't the question for me, but rather what's going to happen if and when this ACTUALLY happens. |

| i doubt they could find a judge to rule in his favor. considering the book was basically him trying to cash in on getting away with murder I doubt anyone will give any sympathy to OJ on this.

| <----Not a lawyer, so a question. He was found not guilty for murdering his ex-wife and Ron Goldman in federal court but was basically found guilty in a civil court proceeding. So how would that work with a "defamation of character" lawsuit (lol)? Last edited by The Noble Savage : 07-04-2007 at 12:28 AM. |

+43 Internets | Considering OJ and his family was involved in writing and making the book, I can't see how they could then turn around and sue for defamation or libel or whatever. They're his own goddamn words. It's poetic justice, that's for sure. I'm glad the courts saw through his daughter's sham company and called them on it. What a fucking waste of skin this guy is. |

| I laughed. The bankruptcy trustee owns the book it seems. I imagine in a funny twist the bankruptcy trustee would also own any civil suits against the book. No clue, just a possibility. With Goldmans getting the proceeds I can see this coming across as morally justified enough to let people satisfy their curiosity, and doing really well in sales. |

| I don't deal with the civil side of things, but my guess would be that the finding in the civil case would be enough. I don't think you need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the potentially libelous statement is true, and the finding in the criminal case was just that the state failed to meet that burden in proving that OJ killed his wife. |

Stories you hear about judges making rulings based on the emotional verdict of "The law says one thing but what feels right is another" are reserved for those too poor take a stand and say "Phssha, yeah. Technically, no.... You can't do that judge. Sry, thx" If you have the money to throw at lawyers an emotional judge verdict will never happen, even judges are not above the law and things will be done by the books as long as there is someone is getting payed enough to stand up and protest. 1. He was found innocent in the court of law. 2 .He is slandered as a double murderer on the front of a sure to be best selling book. 3. He has a lot of money and can afford the support needed to make sure any case brought up is based solely around the two above facts. Good lawyers are divine justice insurance.

+20 Internets | well the thing is, he was found not guilty in criminal court then guilty in civil court, which is dumb. I mean regardless of the fact that he is a murderer who happened to be wealthy and could afford Johnny Cochran, how does the criminal/civil thing factor into any lawsuit he may have against the Goldmans? |

+1 Internets | Simpson had a lot of money squirreled away via legal loopholes. He maintains a lavish lifestyle. Although he may be in trouble because of the loopholes he's exploiting limit his ability to invest his assets. I think in particular he exploits florida state loopholes in regards to retirement/pensions being untouchable by the courts. As to his innocence: he's guilty, but the police bungled the chain of evidence/did some screwy things, then the prosecution tried to use the evidence anyways, then the defense showed at best the police bungled the evidence handling, at worst were fucking with it purposefully, and thus cast doubt upon all the evidence in the case. That's my understanding. The ruling was technically correct, if unsatisfying. What I remember the most was the racial divide over the issue. I think it's largely gone now, though. -- The most important part of the article I think is that they now own the rights to OJ. They legally own his public persona. They can make a lot of cash and show him for a douche. They should get Ares Spears to play OJ in the TV movie. Last edited by Schatze : 07-04-2007 at 05:57 PM. |

+20 Internets | It's kind of funny, in a "fuck you" kind of way, but I don't think I'd want to devote my life to shitting on this guy. Hire Leon to take care of it and move on. In high school we went to this conference, this was as the trial was going on (orshortly after) and the guy leading the DNA electrophoresis demos was pissed and showed us the OJ evidence and how the police got it. There's like a 99.99999% chance that it was someone else. There's seriously like, no doubt at all. But hey, if you can afford the right lawyer you can get away with anything. |
