Looking for an old fantasy book title

I know this is a long shot, it's a book (trilogy?) I read probably 15 years ago, but what I remember is it involving a "villian" who could possess people to extend his life, and one of the people he'd possessed still remained trapped inside his head, having to hide his presence there.

I know that's not much to go on, but thought maybe it might ring a bell. =)

That sounds very familiar... one of the Mercedes Lackey trilogies has a villain like that and I vaguely recall, instead of fighting when the takeover happened, the takee just retreating and thus survived. Mage Winds Trilogy I think.

EDIT: Mages Winds Trilogy, definately. Winds of Fate, Winds of Change, Winds of Fury.

Sure. Actually had to look it up on Amazon to make sure I was right. I'm in Ohio and my library is in California.
