The free press comic scene is better than ever. The problem is not comics, it's the comics you choose to read.

Been reading through The Authority the last week or two. Mostly good shit, even after Ellis left it. I'm really late to the party on this one=P And I hear the later ones really go to shit, but I'm not done with Vol. 2 yet so will just see when I get there.

Also, if you are a Dark Tower fan at all, pick up the Marvel comics of it that are coming out, 4 so far. Following the story from Wizard and Glass mainly(Roland as a teen). But will eventually go all the way up to the fight at Jericho Hill that ends up with Roland as the last gunslinger. With the stiff between Hambry and that moment filled in apparently. I'm really looking forward to it. King is consulting on everything(which he admitted he doesn't do on most movies because he doesn't care about them really) so it's staying on story, and the art is gorgeous. And if you are night a Dark Tower fan, still give it a try and you may become one=P

Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. is finished now. If you have a sense of humor you should really give it a try. I'm sure a TPB will be out before too long(12 issues). Warren Ellis wrote the whole series, and ot stayed funny from start to finish.

I've fallen behind, but Mouse Guard was surprisingly awesome=P Picked it up in some monster DCP pack before I knew how to download individual pieces from a torrent. I mean, how can you not love this stuff. It's a whole series, about mice as like, swordsmen and troopers and shit. And it's written 100% dead seriously. Something I'd never pick up in a shop, but thanks to the wonders of the internet I stumbled across it.

This thread helped a non-comic book reader (me) get into and really appreciate the medium. Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions.

There's something really freshing about going to a comic shop, browsing through the titles and chatting with other people there.

Non comic reader with a Rorschach avatar? I hope that was a recent thing

Shouldn't The Boys be coming out again soon? Lately I haven't read any comics, just too much other stuff going on. Mouse Guard looks awesome, I will have to check that out.

The avatar is recent =P Watchmen was the first TPB that I picked up after reading this thread.

Also, since I just re-read the entire thread, someone said that The Boys TPB and new issue are coming out in June.

Just wait till you stumble in there during the middle of some Magic or similar card game tourny and the stereotypical fat guy that refuses to shower is talking theory and smelling the whole joint up. You want to say something to the guy, but the store owner is giving you the look not to because fatty is keeping the place in business with all the mountain dew he's drinking.

Sorry, just sharing my recuring bad experience with an otherwise good shop.

Friend of mine used to go to Magic tournaments and put car fresheners around people's necks when they stunk.

i never really got into american comics but i had a satisfying spell with 2000AD for a few years. Button Man was fantastic and should be made into a film, Rogue Trooper (Henry Flint's one), ABC Warriors and Judge Dredd are excellent. judge dredds ongoing mega-city politics make for a good overarching plot (in between disasters like necropolis, inferno and the judges of death)

i remember one 2000ad series from years ago called Firekind where some mercenaries come to a planet and start butchering the natives to get some elixer of youth and i'm thinking "this isn't like justice league". then seeing something dark, poetic and beautifully drawn like the clown i think the quality of artwork also leaves marvel / dc for dead.

a google search for 2000AD torrents will turn up a 12Gb file which contains 2000AD from issue 1 to 1443. there were some awesome awesome stories and if my country didn't suck so bad for broadband i'd be downloading it now (10gb monthly cap ftl)

I stopped reading mainstream comics when I was 15-16 also. When I started having to buy my own comics and when they started to have like 10 pages of comic and the rest were ads.

Manga aside, the only US comics I purchase are the occasional batman graphic novels and whenever a new Usagi Yojimbo comes out. Though I kind of fell behind on UY, I don't really dig the whole traveling with the son thing.

As for the daily strips, I'll admit i'm a giant queer and love reading "For Better or For Worse".

Just finished Alias/The Pulse this week so now you get my commentary=P

God damn it! Jessica Jones was fucking great. I am a complete sucker for Bendis writing crime drama type shit. His style just sucks me right in, so I am biased to be sure...I guess. But I really liked her character. She was so damn, I don't know, relatable? She was vulnerable, she was bitchy, she was impatient, she fucked up but did her best. She was just a flat out great character. The way she quit being a super hero, how she was intertwined with so many heroes without changing their stories. Her first conversation with Peter Parker was fucking gold, see below. And that issue was done in old comic style dot coloring for the first part. And now she's just Luke Cage's baby's mama. I didn't instantly hate The Pulse. I liked the idea, and I was willing to accept a smaller role for Jessica Jones because I've always liked Ben Urich and I liked the outsider view idea they had going with it. But I guess it's cancelled and we won't even get that now, so now Jessica is just another also ran. It sucks.

A new story by Jim Shooter with art by Bob Hall? Count me in.

FYI, Harbinger was an awesome, awesome series. I recommend everyone to check this out, nothing but good stuff from Shooter and Lapham.

I can't believe they're reprinting this stuff with new material by Shooter. Very excited.

PREVIEWS: The Comic Shop's Catalog! - HARBINGER: THE BEGINNING HC

Rumor is they're going to put the original Shooter stuff by Valiant back in print (all the pre-Unity stuff, along with Unity) and that Shooter is going to be writing the original properties for them again. Not sure on where the stories will pick up or anything like that, but it will be interesting.
