Its not the maester who is jacqen, but the kid. was his name pate? Anyways, the one who dies at the very begining is who jacqen assumes the role of. He appears again in the final chapters of the book serving that maester. Their connections arent discoled, but the maester doesnt seem to be tight lipped about his ideas with stealthmode jacqen there.

Yeah I realize that I never thought about it because to me faceless men only specialized in killing people and didn't hang around afterwards.

Ok yeah, I was a little confused about that and haven't remembered to go back and reread a bit on it. I remember the beginning chapter had some kid (Pate?) that wanted a girl named Rosey, he stole some shit, met with some mage/alchemist, and then the ground "rushed up to his face." So I assumed he died, then I saw him again at end and assumed maybe he just got his face smashed in. So really the real Pate is dead and the new one is Jaqen? Am I gathering this correctly?

What indications are there that it's Jaqen? I figured it was either a Faceless Man or someone with similar abilities, but never thought it was him in particular.

I don't have my book in front of me, but the description of the alchemist is fairly close to the description of Jaqens new face when he left Arya.

larseny has the right of it; go back and find the description of Jaqen there as he is leaving Arya and the description of the man Pate meets at the beginning of Feast; they are almost exactly the same.
