Ilium and Olympos were good, though if you enjoy them you should check out Simmons' Hyperion series, which is excellent. But if you want something that will get your ready for 300 (aside from the graphic novel itself) check out Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire. It's been recommended by some posters here before but that may have been before the 300 craze. Steven Pressfield is a gifted historical fiction novelist, his other novels on Alexander (The Afghan Campaign) has been making the rounds for its parallel to modern dilemmas in the same region.

Oddly enough, his most popular book isn't history at all, it's The Legend of Bagger Vance, which was turned into a will smith movie, but don't let that discourage you.

Just finished the first book of the trilogy(Assassin's Apprentice) in about 4 days and thoroughly enjoyed it. She does a great job of setting up a scene without spending 5 pages describing it, which I love. No 5 paragraph verbal pictures of how puffy the clouds were that day. It's good shit and I'm looking forward to getting more of her books.

Yeah.. Assassin Trilogy is nice.
Sadly though, it goes downward from there with each successive trilogy by Hobb slowely becoming both worse and more of the same at the same time.
