I'm having trouble retaining interest in these books... The characters are amazing, but considering the timelines are just all over the place, characters disappear for hundreds of pages (or even several books), and there are about 50 new characters introduced every single time a new book begins. As a person who reads maybe one chapter per night before bed, I find myself having trouble remembering the nuances of each book, and even forgetting who some of the characters are. I'm on The Bonehunters right now, and there are SO MANY different soldiers with seemingly randomized names out of the WoW Character Creation screen, its hard to follow. Anyone else find this when reading this series casually?

So I just finished reading Toll the Hounds, and I didn't really like it as much as the others. The first half to two thirds of the book just seemed to drag, although the ending was still pretty crazy, just like his other books. Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Awww, it's okay. Since this is the second time you've sniped at someone who didn't like the series (on this page alone), I'll just go ahead and assume you are some frothing fanboy. Did someone touch you in your no-no spot with a book one day?

| So tomorrow is the official release of the two new Malazan books (at least here in the states)... Toll the Hounds: Book Eight of The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (Hardcover - Sep 16, 2008) and Return of the Crimson Guard by Ian C. Esslemont (Hardcover - Sep 16, 2008) I'm going to swing by BN tomorrow and pick them up...

Pretty sure Return of the Crimson Guard does not have a US release date yet. The release date you're quoting is the UK/Canadian release date. Easy enough to order from Amazon.ca though. Toll the Hounds is already on bookshelves in the deluxe TPB form, saw it on Saturday. I'll be very interested in what people have to say about Return of the Crimson Guard. I thought it was an excellent book.
