I'm having trouble retaining interest in these books...

The characters are amazing, but considering the timelines are just all over the place, characters disappear for hundreds of pages (or even several books), and there are about 50 new characters introduced every single time a new book begins.

As a person who reads maybe one chapter per night before bed, I find myself having trouble remembering the nuances of each book, and even forgetting who some of the characters are.

I'm on The Bonehunters right now, and there are SO MANY different soldiers with seemingly randomized names out of the WoW Character Creation screen, its hard to follow. Anyone else find this when reading this series casually?

I'm sure you have noticed that there is a dramatis personae at the start of each book. These come in handy - use them.

They are the Primer of novels though to be fair. I've enjoyed each book much more on re-read than on first take.

I definitely love the main series overall but I'm less sold on the other guy's stuff.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
What is with him constantly using direct emotive content? When it was just Kruppe it was fine. Then you get the priest in book 2. By book 3 I'm noticing every damned character doing it.

Example: "I amusedly interject right now - what the fuck?"

I realize it can be useful especially in conveying sarcasm and sometimes humor, or a character's idiosyncratic use of dialogue. But when it starts to be used in other dialogue as a way to convey tone etc., that's just poor writing. Word choice, punctuation, informative content should be used.

1 was good. Two the ending was kinda shaky. Coltaine's death, then the however many pages after that were just... Didn't feel right. If he wanted to include all that he did in book 2, it had definite structure and pacing problems. Book 3 just seems... How do I top 1, and 2 (very different books)... Hmm, I'll start using super-saiyan power levels for characters. Just doesn't feel right, at the beginning. I know this sort of fits the theme of the books, but it just doesn't feel right as of where I am now in 3.

Despite the shakiness, and some hokey bits, book 2 was better than 1. I guess judging 3 when none of the stuff has been off putting enough to start reading is a bit premature.

I'll keep reading, it's better than a lot of what I've read, but...

spoil tag that shit, you're ruining the plot of one of the best books in the series.

So I just finished reading Toll the Hounds, and I didn't really like it as much as the others. The first half to two thirds of the book just seemed to drag, although the ending was still pretty crazy, just like his other books.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
One question though, when Brood breaks Dragnipur at the end, and they mention that everyone in the sword would be spit out, doesn't that mean Hood will also be back? Whats to then stop him from becoming the god of death again? Also, it sucks that Erikson killed Rake off, he was definitely one of the cooler characters in the book

I really tried to like this series, really tried. But, for whatever reason I just cannot get into the books.

Oh well, save money that way I guess.

Awww, it's okay. Since this is the second time you've sniped at someone who didn't like the series (on this page alone), I'll just go ahead and assume you are some frothing fanboy. Did someone touch you in your no-no spot with a book one day?

Not liking the books is fine - but Christ, at least move on to some other good stuff. Greenwood/any FR material is utter shit.

And for fucks sake know what you are talking about before dogpiling. My thread on Greenwood's new series (http://www.fohguild.org/forums/milli...or-series.html) was anything but a glowing endorsement.

So tomorrow is the official release of the two new Malazan books (at least here in the states)...

Toll the Hounds: Book Eight of The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (Hardcover - Sep 16, 2008)

and

Return of the Crimson Guard by Ian C. Esslemont (Hardcover - Sep 16, 2008)

I'm going to swing by BN tomorrow and pick them up...

Pretty sure Return of the Crimson Guard does not have a US release date yet. The release date you're quoting is the UK/Canadian release date. Easy enough to order from Amazon.ca though.

Toll the Hounds is already on bookshelves in the deluxe TPB form, saw it on Saturday.

I'll be very interested in what people have to say about Return of the Crimson Guard. I thought it was an excellent book.
