Nightchill? She's either a God or an Ascendant one, though I thought it was the latter.

Finally found a copy of Night of Knives and it's just as good as the rest. Temper is awesome as is Jhenna. Now if only Amazon can find me the copy of the Return of the Crimson Guard I ordered!

The limited edition is out currently. PS Publishing still has some copies left, but it's not cheap.

1/3 of the way through Midnight Tides. Not as bad as I thought it would be. I have some thoughts on where it's going but I really don't know where this is in the timeline, but I'm assuming its a few years before HoC.

NO spoilers here:

Just finished Toll the Hounds I have to say it was pretty good.. As a whole I would rank it maybe the 3rd best, however if you were just to read the good stuff at the end it would have to tie for number one "chain of dogs good".

Some of the beginning is a lot of filling in on stuff so that was pretty nice..

I think that a second reading will be much better where I am not rushing through it though.

MT is pretty much concurrent with the first few books, yes. And confusing as hell because they refer to everything you know with different terms and they don't even know what houses and warrens are. (but the raw power of holds is so.. sooo awesome)

And in that vein. I'm thinking now that Cedance = Ascendancy, but with Holds? Explains why the Ceda was so fuckin badass. Dunno, it was just something Hannan Mosarg was saying to another character.

Actually, I'm still confused about something from Bonehunters..

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Sha'ik is reborn, again. Felisin's POV indicated that all of her power was tied to Dryjna. But Dryjna and her whirlwind are dead. So Sha'ik the Apocalyptic is not a creation of Dryjna, but just uh an instrument of angry spirits or something? Or she WAS a creation of Dryjna, but is now a force on her own? And her new power comes from the Crippled God, or was it from whatever power was born from the inferno? In fact I can't recall now if Felisin younger had the gift of knowledge that Sha'ik 2.0 had, but the commentary from the Gods etc do seem to indicate that she is the real deal and not just a figurehead. I'm very unclear on Sha'iks nature, and its obviously a plot line that we're going to come back to before long, with Paran and his army still being in Seven Cities.

I read it as the Crippled God seeing an opportunity and seizing it (the destruction of Dryjna). He's using the power of the name Sha'ik through Felisin younger along with the plague as a way to spread his influence to Seven Cities

I thought of that, but she seems to be the real deal per other characters comments.

Speak of the devil and he will appear - I just received my copy of the limited edition of Return of the Crimson Guard in the mail today and it's pretty nice, although a quick glance through it and you can spot all of the typos that people have been bitching about. Once I'm done with Toll the Hounds I'll get started on that one.

Can't recall anything said along those lines, but its been a while.

As to Holds and the Ceda...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Gothos' ritual isolated the continent of Lether, keeping it out of reach from the remaining world. For example, it prevented High House Death from establishing a foothold, which is why undead are not uncommon on the continent (Hood cannot claim them). This isolation prevented Lether from "evolving magically" so to speak, leaving them with the primitive Holds; the precursors to Houses. Magic derived from holds are a more primal, unrefined form. Hold-magic allows for the insanely destructive power you've seen used by the mages of Lether but at the cost of control.

The Ceda is a formidable mage; the preeminent wizard of the Letherii. The cedance is an involved ritual that a Ceda employs to generate incredible power. Recall that his ritual took a great deal of effort and many days to prepare. The enormous amount of preparation and power invested in that ritual (the tiles used are akin to a Finnest, I would say) is what allows him to unleash nuclear assrape on the Edur in the end until he gets cheapshotted by Trull . The Ceda was indeed a badass.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The tiles are of the various holds, and personage within the holds, akin to the deck of dragons. At least that's how i understood it. Wouldn't then, the ritual, have unleashed a combination of powers from the different holds? I mean, he stalemated the magic of the crippled god (albeit channeled through the Warlock King).
