where do you get your books?

online or in a bookstore?

personally i currently buy most of my books in online versions- ie electronically.

mainly cuz i can read them at work when i got a "dead period"/want to take a few minute break from work.

I am a sci-fi/fantasy book reader and get Most of my books from Baen with their webscription service:

15 dollars for ~5-8 books that come out in a particular month, or

5 dollars for an individual book OR

for your Favorite active authors, they have E-Arc's (advanced reader copy) which are early versions of books due to come out anywhere from a month to 8 months later for 15 dollars-one book i got in may and it hasn't been published in paperform YET(december)...

i have 13 e-arc's and ~110 "ebooks" from monthly purchases..

my favorite baen author's are

John Ringo
David Weber
&
wen spencer (doesn't write enough imo)

as well as several others

Baen also has their Free Library with alot of good books there..

I get them from borders... there's a borders right next to the subway by my office and there's a borders about a block from my apartment. It's not as convenient as mailorder or amazon, but neither of those have hot college bitches lounging in the cafe.

Book store. I've found that the remaindered book section is a wealth of cheap, good hardback books that are sometimes cheaper than their paperback editions.

Birthday presents. I'm edging in on owning ~10,000 books or so. I've bought maybe a 1,000 from Amazon and 500ish from Borders, rest was all birthday presents. I go to the library a lot instead of buying as well.

A bit of both online/bookstore shopping. I have a B&N membership card, so from time to time I do a little shopping online, or go to the store itself to browse. And good grief, ten THOUSAND? Where the hell do you store them all?!

Barnes and Noble for me, I have one about 3 minutes away from where I live and they tend to have everything I want to read available right away.

Amazon, since they just magically appear at my office a week later. Chapter's I guess if I'm going to a brick and mortar store, since they're basically the only game in town. Sometimes the public library, as well. But typically I find Amazon to be the most convenient, in terms of out of stock items etc.

Amazon or B/N here in town. Lately I've actually been downloading audiobooks though, I'm lame. It takes 5x as long to finish a book when someone is reading them to you

well 1000 books take up ~3 large bookcases sooo 10k.....geez. once my kids are a few years older i MIGHT convert the extra room(which currently is a toy room) on the first floor to a full blown "library" room but still....

my wife thinks i am bad with about 1000 books.

Used book store. 50-90% off. Sometimes I'll grab a new hardback at Barnes & Noble if it's a series I'm really into(ASoI&F), but generally I figure there's enough books out there that I haven't read there's no need to rush out and buy new books. If I really like a book/series I'll eventually pick them all up in hardback.

Plus when the books cost like 1-4$ you're willing to take a lot more fliers on new series and authors. Can really indulge my inner geek and buy any book with a cool dragon on the cover. If it turns out good, yay. If not, well it was 2$ so who cares?

Nearby used bookstore for most purchases or browsing. It sounds geeky, but I like how weathered books smell. It also gives me an excuse to wander the aisles checking if there are any cute, petite, indie literate redheads with glasses. I have refined taste.

For anything more than 50 years old I use the UC intercollege library network. Most books are only RFID coded in the bookjacket, which means you can carve out the tag with a pocketknife in the bathroom without damaging the cover and just stroll through the scanners on your way out. Granted it's something of an asshat thing to do, but my leanings are antique enough that no book so liberated is checked out more than once every five years. I'm a bad person.

In 7ft tall bookshelves. Lots of them. I put aside a room to be an actual library. If I ever run over, which can happen, I'll box a few of the lesser read/used books up until I move into a bigger place. I have six boxes worth stacked up in a closet at the moment, not moving for another year so... but it has been worse.
