+12 Internets | Comic Goodness So what books are you reading that are not tradition/famous? We can make a thread for DC/Marvel normal books later, right now how about some slightly more obscure books. Invincible: This one is really not very obscure=P It's image, but it's by a well known crew and has a lot of pub. For a reason. It's a fairly generic super-hero and his story but totally done right. Everyone should read this, you don't need to know any background or anything, it's almost completely started from scratch(minor interaction with some other Image characters). Warlord: This is DC published, but a new property as far as I know. Basically guy slips back in time somehow, and people think he's some kind of messiah/god meant to save their land. Which he just might be. The art is way too sloppy for my tastes, but the story has kept me interested long enough to keep right on hating it. Underworld: Marvel owned, though not dealing with them much until some Punisher fun towards the end. I really liked this. Basically a former professional gangster tough guy gets out of prision and has to deal with the new world of meta-humans enforcers/thugs. It's well done though the writing could have been a little better. Was a limited series though so I don't think we'll be seeing any more. Will post more later if I think of it and there's any interest.

+6 Internets | Right now: none. I'll probably pick up the habit again soon. I used to love most titles by DC/Vertigo. Dark Horse was also amazing. Some independent titles, Poison Elves, Concrete, Cerebus, etc, really old school shit. I really liked Valiant (now Acclaim I think but they also suck ass) when it first came out, good shit. I recently started rereading Shade, The Changing Man, such a good comic. I won't even try to explain it, you just have to read it. Hellblazer was awesome. Preacher, also awesome. sorry it's been years, i still pick up torrents of these books sometimes though, still good reading. |

| The Boys -- Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's latest collaboration. If there was ever any doubt that Ennis hates traditional superheroes, The Boys puts that idea to rest. The Eternals -- some of Gaiman's best work since Sandman. Punisher MAX -- This is what the Punisher should have always been like. Ennis is by far the best Punisher writer there's ever been. Various other Vertigo stuff (100 Bullets, Y: The Last Man, Bite Club - Vampire Crime Unit, Deadman, Fables, Jack of Fables, etc.) |

+1 Internets | Aside from the standard Marvel and DC fare I really enjoy Boneyard by Richard Moore. About a guy who inherits the family graveyard which happens to be home to vampires, monsters, and various sorts of undead riff raff. It's not a horror book but a humor one. It's published by NBM Publishing who does a lot adult comic stuff too if you're into that stuff. There are a few collected editions out there to get into which reproduce the book in full color instead of the B&W it's originals are published in. Having read the book in B&W I'm not sure I could get into a colored version. It'd be kind of weird. heh Herobear and the Kid by Mike Kunkel is a great book too. About a boy and his stuffed polar bear who turns into a red cape wearing super bear. I really love the art and the story is very fun too. Planetary is a bad ass book. I'm not a fan of everything Warren Ellis writes but every issue of Planetary has me eager for more. John Cassady handles the art chores. 'nuff said there. It can get confusing at times for sure. I've had to go back and catch up once or twice because it's so damn slow to publish but it's always worth the wait. |

| The four indy staples: 1. Bone 2. Cerebus 3. Concrete 4. Madman Theres a reason these books get so much attention. All are pretty widely available in trade paperback. I'm sure you could get them at Borders or B&N even now. I've gone from mainstream books, to lots of weird indy shit, back to the mainstream stuff. Mainly because I can't afford to invest the time and money into trying lots of new stuff anymore but I love comic books and like to at least keep up with whats going on with my favorite characters. There is actually a lot of really good shit coming out now which I can't afford. Another good option is to check the library. I get a lot of stuff there. Any of the DC/Vertigo stuff is typically topnotch and readily available. If you haven't read any of the Sandman stuff yet you are missing out.

+12 Internets | So I've just gone back and finally started reading Powers. Only 20 issues in now, but it's amazing. Love when someone gives us a new perspective on superheroes. Volume one is 37 issues I think(maybe 38, has one of those annoying 0.5 issues), and volume 2 is up to I think 21 issues now. Can't speak for the whole series, but I would heartily recommend picking up volume 1.
