Gates of Fire.

This is a great book about the spartans.

It'll make you pop 11 boners (even if you're a girl.)

I had a half-finished script for Thermopylae, but I gave it up when I realized that Patrick Stewart was just too goddamn old to play Leonidas.

Yeah, it's a thread necromancy, but two people heaping accolades on this book aren't enough. I picked it up based on Darph's post and just finished. It's like condensed non-gay sex in book form, and for a novel filled with half-nude muscled guys grunting a lot that's no mean feat. Go read it.

That is all.

I picked it because of this thread too, and it's actually better than Darph or Tirinal (or I) were able to express. It's fun, violent, clever, very well-written and especially fascinating because it's based on true events. Characters and dialogues are perfect.
Best book I've read in a long, long while.

I'm about 80% through the book. I like it, but perhaps not as much as the above posters. Perhaps my impressions will change when I reach the end and I'll pop my eleventh boner, but I'm only working at about 3 boners right now.

It is a good read, and certainly better than most out there.

This is ridiculous-good. My shock at seeing Colonel Hackworth endorse it sealed the deal though.

Ten types of awesome, and in my opinion, 300 should have stolen the plot.

This book is one of my faves of all time.

Also, Frank Miller's 300 and Steven Pressfield's Gates of fire are two completely different movies.

If ancient Greek historical-fiction interests you check out Steven Pressfield's book about the Peloponnesian War.
