Graphic Novel Recommendations?

After being blown away with Sin City the movie, I decided to check out the graphic novel and was equally impressed. I read 300 in my local Borders, but that's the extent of my graphic novel experience (other than the first issue of Preacher which a friend let me read- also very good). Can anyone recommend any more good graphic novels in the same vein as these?

Well, if you like Sin City and Preacher (which you should absolutely read all of) I would suggest Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX. There's 6 volumes of it out now, with number 7 due in early May. Global Frequency is really good too, and if you like that check out Transmetropolitan and Fell by the same guy (Warren Ellis). The Watchmen is an obvious choice too.

If you like the Heroes TV show, I'd suggest Rising Stars and Supreme Power.

Not sure if you'd like Sandman or not. It's the best comic series of all time, but it's really nothing like any of those you mentioned.

Also check out my post at the end of the State of Comic Books thread for other suggestions (most of which have been collected in GN form by now).

I'd heard about the Sandman series from a friend. Did some checking and I learned its done by Neil Gaiman so I'm definitely going to read those. I've liked all his novels, especially American Gods. Thanks for the input.

I would like to add The Books of Magic to that fine list. It's better during the first half when Neil Gaiman had a more active role in the writing, but the second half is still excellent, with a very strong finish imo,(75 issues like Sandman) It's my second or third favorite graphic novel series.

It's like Harry Potter, but more mature, and better written, with a more fully realized vision of magic.

I would definitely recommend Gaiman's four-issue miniseries that started the Books of Magic, and the Children's Crusade thing (2 issues plus 5 annuals) was really good too. Never read the 75 issues that followed that though (or the four other series after that), mainly because I swore off reading spin-offs of Gaiman's work that weren't written by him after reading some bad Sandman ones. Maybe I'll grab a few issues of it and give it a chance.

And yea, the similarities to Harry Potter are definitely... uncanny, to say the least.

It's another Sandman spinoff, but Lucifer is very good.

V for Vendetta and Dark Knight Returns are both stand alones that I really enjoyed and haven't been mentioned yet.

Hellboy is very good but isn't available in an omnibus form yet. You'll have to pick it up in mini graphic novels that roughly cover each story arch.

Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns are hands down the two very best. Superman: Red Son is another solid title, and V for Vendetta is terrific. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a hell of a lot better than the movie, too. I also enjoyed Marvel 1602, but if you're not a comic geek that won't go very far.

Most anything by Alan Moore, Frank Miller or Neil Gaiman is going to be awesome.

In the vein of something a bit more literary, I would definitely recommend Art Speigelman's Maus or In the Shadow of No Towers. Both books are very engaging, and are great reads.

Maus is the story of the halocaust told in stories by Speigelman's grandfather, who was a halocaust survivor. It is told with the Nazis as cats and the imprisoned Jews as mice, pinned in concentration camps.
