I'd vote David Brin's "The Postman". Pretty interesting and different compared to the shit movie.

"Ghosts in the Snow" by Tamara Siler Jones. It's a medievil fantasy forensics along the lines of CSI, but with some fantasy elements. I think most people here would enjoy it.

I might be up for it, would be nice if we picked books that can be downloaded(audio/text) as I'm kind of poor(student). I like fantasy but can read sci-fi as well I guess. I also like popular science books, personally I mostly read history and science but can read other stuff as well. Not sure if people are interested in that though...

I'd probably be down if it was a book I was interested in. Like some of the others have said, I love to read but find myself overwhelmed with the amount of stuff out there and never know what to pick. Lets stay away from real mainstream stuff as I've read most of it.

Subjects I like: modern horror (but not emo werewolves and vampires crap), fantasy, sci-fi (as long as it isn't too bogged down in hard science stuff), humor, mob/crime, and non-fiction (history and biographies).

Well Zarcath has to choose the books, or someone has to be in charge. All this voting shit doesn't fly. But yeah i'm in although I vastly prefer non-fiction!

I browsed through a lot of books on Amazon and the bestseller lists, I decided to pick Old Man's War. You can read the first few pages on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Old-Mans-War-J...dp/0765315246/

Quote:
With his wife dead and buried, and life nearly over at 75, John Perry takes the only logical course of action left him: he joins the army. Now better known as the Colonial Defense Force (CDF), Perry's service-of-choice has extended its reach into interstellar space to pave the way for human colonization of other planets while fending off marauding aliens. The CDF has a trick up its sleeve that makes enlistment especially enticing for seniors: the promise of restoring youth. After bonding with a group of fellow recruits who dub their clique the Old Farts, Perry finds himself in a new body crafted from his original DNA and upgraded for battle, including fast-clotting "smartblood" and a brain-implanted personal computer. All too quickly the Old Farts are separated, and Perry fights for his life on various alien-infested battlegrounds. Scalzi's blending of wry humor and futuristic warfare recalls Joe Haldeman's classic, The Forever War (1974), and strikes the right fan--pleasing chords to probably garner major sf award nominations.

Everyone that plans to participate should pick up a copy of the book by Nov 4th. I'll start a seperate thread for book discussion. After we've finished the book everyone can give their own reviews. Please reply here if you do plan on participating, just so I know i'm not the only one reading the book :P

I'm too busy with schoolwork and my own reading from that to participate, but I would suggest China Mieville for subsequent book clubs. He's done 2-3 really good books and they're off the beaten path of most fantasy I've read.

Has a kind of Final Fantasy feel to it, to be honest.

Let's try another book. I'll nominate Ham and Cheese to select the next one.

Angels and Demons is a great read... I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it to anyone.
