| Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell (no spoilers) Well, well I've started on this by recommendations but I just can't seem to get into it. I've read the first few chapters with Mr. Norell and it's just dull for me atm. Does it catch up? Do we see some magic in action other than his (minor spoiler) church thing? We get any kind of explanation of why he can use it, why it's so rare or whatever? I'm seriously thinking about bookshelfing this as the first book EVER and get started with American Gods or Nightwatch instead. Please, please tell me it gets good very, very soon.

| It gets better when you meet Johnathan Strange (about page 200) but its always a Victorian style novel with very little modern realism to it (and so very PG, even Harry Potter is darker). It also has connecting plots (like the war with Napolean) but never an overarching plot. A good book, but a bit overrated.
