Pratchet's Discworld's various books follows several different sets of characters and a few stand on their own, but they all share the connection of existing in the same world, and often the same main city. As someone else mentioned they did, I've also read about two dozen of the books with no thought to order and it's never been an issue. He's not telling some grand epic fantasy story, but rather using the world as a vehicle for the stories he wants to tell. I can't say any but Nightwatch will ever be one of my "absolute favorite" books, but you know if you read of one his you'll never walk away disappointed, and that's pretty valuable in and of itself. The wiki entry actually has a pretty good description of the series and groups of characters. Discworld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | |

+11 Internets | I'm a huge fan of all the City Watch books. It has the largest repeating cast of any of the core groups he uses. And they are constantly adding new and interesting members to the Watch. Someone already mentioned Detritus, I love that GD troll. The writing and dialogue for all of them is just so spot on. I laugh out loud more during one of the City Watch books(except Night Watch, it was a bit more serious) than I probably have reading every other book I've ever read combined. And that's a lot of books.
