The Comic Books Thread.

I figured what the hell...

What's everyone reading these days? Civil War seems to be the big thing. I think it's pretty cool, but more like a huge gimmic.

Of course it's a huge gimmick. But it's been pretty entertaining so far. Lightyears ahead of the piece of shit Infinite Crisis DC did last year. Such a letdown.

Almost all Marvel stuff right now.

Nextwave rules all. Great shit. More hilarious single pages in one issue than most "funny" comics have in a year.

Underworld was a pretty cool little mini-series. Nothing to do with the shitty movies BTW.

Anything Ultimate is still pretty much money. Though the Ultimate version of Deadpool(Ultimate Spider-Man) was fucking rubbish.

Speaking of Deadpool: Cable & Deadpool is good shits usually. Some issues not so great, but in general it's well written and has a lot of really funny parts. Deadpool done right.

Invincible is probably my favorite superhero type book out right now. Really well done. Cool story, nice art, good sense of humor.

Been reading the Annihilation thing from Marvel off and on. Think it finishes up this month so will have to check out the ending. It's not bad, good for those fans of the cosmic stuff(Silver Surfer, Skrulls/Kree's etc).

Astonishing X-Men is great. Whedon makes good comics.

New Avengers was cool. Dunno what Civil War is going to do to it though.

And re-read Kingdom Come recently. Gorgeous books start to finish. Alex Ross is amazing. Anyone who hasn't read this definately should go find it somewhere. Shows how awesome DC can be when they stay away from the stupid "5 versions of every hero" bullshit. Superman/boy/girl/dog/cow/chicken. Blech. Just avoid that tagged on abortion "The Kingdom".

Recent Hulk series(Planet Hulk) has been pretty cool Gladiator Hulk on another world.

Exiles had kinda flown off the tracks, latest issue looks like they could be back though. I hope so, great series.

30 Days of Night: Dead Space. I've only read the first 2 issues so far, dunno how many are out, but it's been pretty good. I usually stay away from horror comics but this one I like.

And finally Warlord. Only 5 issues so far I think, but pretty good shit. Not a huge fan of the art, but the story is cool. Experimental test pilot type dude in mid-evil times.

Almost all DC/Vertigo stuff:
Bite Club: VCU
Y: The Last Man
American Virgin
100 Bullets
Fables

Only Marvel book I read is Punisher (MAX).

Started reading 52, but I don't like what they've done with one of my favorite comic characters (The Question) so I've shelved that for now.

Other than that, I'm just waiting very impatiently for The Boys to start. Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson working together? Sign me up.

Yeah, think it was him.

...this is sorta stemming from the Superman vs CM thread. First off, I do not follow superman at ALL.

Why does Superman just not bust into Lex Luthers place and encave his skull? I always assumed it was just because Superman was a goody goody and had some moral obligation.

Seeing how he can wail on another hero who tries to uphold justice it doesn't seem like he has the moral fiber required to allow a guy as dubious as Lex to live.

Seems to me the second Superman went even slightly rogue the first thing he would do is toss Lex into the sun or something.

Or is it just some sorta Kryptonite thing?

Superman/Batman never kill anyone. They refuse to.

There was a 2 part episode of the cartoon(Forget which, JLA/JLU one of the Justice League ones) where a league from an alternate reality(The Justice Lords) had killed Luthor for killing the Flash. Ended up with like a police state/totalitarian regime dealy. They came to our reality and Superman lobotomized Doomsday with his heat vision. Never saw the second episode=P Just showed what it would be like if they killed people I guess.

Holy shit Gimm, Marvel fan are we? :P

Anyway, thanks for pointing out "The Boys." I didn't know about it. It looks like a hell of an intresting comic.

As for DC's books. I'm a big DC Superman fan. I don't really read Justice League, but I loved Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and Superman: Birthright (though reviews were mixed).

Invincible is Image! And the 30 Days of Night and Warlord are...not Marvel. May both be Image also.

I actually dislike a huge chunk of Marvel's stuff. I just haven't seen anything from DC that I really liked in awhile. And the Infinite Crisis stuff sucked so hard I've kinda been shying away from it. Actually been reading the recent All Star Supermans, though the last one sucked pretty hard.

Anyone read the new Eternals? Need to pick them up, looked interesting. Warren Ellis, yay.

I recently read the entire run of Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men, good stuff from a hardcore DC Fan. Other than that, I bought all of The Ultimates TPBs and Ultimate Galactus recently. I'm a bit behind the times though, last thing I was keeping up with was Infinite Crisis, but since that's over things have kinda slowed down imo. Is Civil War worth picking up? I've heard mixed things. I usually just pick up TPBs, but if it's good I'll catch it while it's fresh.

Personally, I would wait for it to come around in TPB form. Reason is that it seems to span off into a bunch of different comics and getting them all would be a pain in the ass.

I don't watch JLA much, but I do remember that episode. Which brings up another question:

Would a superhero, whom stands up for justice, escape from prison if they killed someone/stole something/destroyed property and they felt their actions were justified/misjudged? And would that superhero then be a supervillain by their actions? Would their superbuddies support them, and then condemn themselves in the eyes of normal humans, or would they assist in the escapee's arrest?

A big part of the story in Kingdom Come is Superman retiring after a new hero kills the Joker coming out of a courthouse. The guy goes on trial himself and gets off scot-free. So Superman retires to be a farmer.

And of course The Punisher is pretty keen on punishing the wicked...

Wonder Woman killed Max Lord in Infinite Crisis and it was broadcast to the world. If she hadn't though, he would have kept his hold over Superman and god knows what he would have done.
