| I'm currently reading The Dragonbone Chair, book 1 of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams. First 200 pages = total boring shit. I was warned of this myself. Seriously though, if you can get through that first bit of boring mess, it picks up and is a very good read. |

+2 Internets | Asmadai, I hope you enjoy it. I had forgotten that the entry to it was very Nevertheless, it is still to date my favorite non-classic Fantasy series (although it should be classic fantasy. That series changed my frickin preferred genre for a few years). |

Haven't looked through the entire thread, but I would toss in... His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. Has sort of a Harry Potter feel, but a little more grown-up... slightly... it's a good series. Ender's Game.

| I second His Dark Materials. It's really something.

+2 Internets | I liked The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind, but I'm the only person I know who liked it. Someone refresh me with the name of the series that had Gerald Terrant who fed off of terror in it, and the Fae magic and all that goodness? I can't for the life of me remember, and I'd like to read them again. I haven't read all of the thread, but Magic Kingdom For Sale: Sold is pretty awesome for a quick read. I haven't tried any Wheel of Time or Song of Fire/Ice stuff yet, don't really have time to read much these days. Belgariad was mentioned, and is an amazing series. As is the Shanara stuff, Sword of Shanara, Elf Song of Shanara, there are others that I don't recall, been like 15 years since I've read them. Terry Brooks I think was the author? I like the Sword of Truth series too, I sometimes apply the Wizard's Rules in my everyday life, especially the first one. Good stuff there. | |

+1 Internets | I am starting Malazan Book of the Fallen now. Very meaty and weird. I like it. My biggest recommendation: the Deverry series, by Katherine Kerr. Start with Daggerspell. She has an imaginative narrative that is broken up temporally, so you get fragments of the past that tie into the Main Plot throughout the entire series. Interesting characters, world-making, and weird revelations throughout. |
