Since dude was a mental health doctor I imagine he saw people that were fucked up from the war. I imagine that, added with his views on the war, along with his impending deployment, which was possibly a punishment, made him snap.

Around eleven US troops have been dying daily in Afghanistan/Iraq lately. Eleven more dying here sucks but I can't help it if I'm more interested in how a guy can hit 44 soldiers with two pistols in the middle of the largest military base in the country before getting stopped let alone how he could have rose all the way to major.

Hate the guy who screened the major for mental stability, hate the guy who didn't provide more security for our at ease, unarmed mass of troops, don't hate me for being in awe at what seems to be either an amazing feat of skill or baffling incompetence on the part of the military complex though. Really that's the only unusual story here, troops dying and nutjobs snapping is nothing new. Forty four servicemen being knocked out of comission by one asshole with a pistol should be a wake-up call.

Is it really any wonder that a Muslim psychiatrist with an Arabic name, who held strong pro-Islamic views, and who specialized in post-traumatic stress disorder treatment would feel harassed by--oh, I dunno, let's say his patients--for, if for no other reason, than the sheer irony of having their PTSD treated by someone not so terribly removed from the people who gave it to them in the first place. The only difference between one and the other seems to have been one of rank.

Talked to my dad again. He says the FBI is in charge and everyone in the building that was a witness is being put up for the night in a neighboring building, probably until they can be interviewed.

For reference--and because talking heads on the news are wondering if the dude was a crack shot or if our Army is full of sitting ducks--the building that this happened in is the size of a shoppette. Empty a handgun into a convenience store-sized building filled with soldiers standing in line and you're bound to look like a regular Rambo on paper.

Deployment facilities aren't meant to be anything other than large corrals for servicemembers while they wait to process through the line. At Wright-Patt AFB it looks like a very small waiting room (complete with bleachers), from where you leave to enter an extremely long corridor that has about 8 stations where you receive everything from legal to religious advice/etc before heading out to the flightline. It wouldn't be difficult to gun down a lot of people in that type of building.

Very sad story. Interesting to see that he's alive and what'll come of all this.

If it was an SRP site, like reported, that means a shit ton of people standing around waiting for paperwork and shots. It's a hellish process. He probably didn't have to aim, and it was likely difficult for the people there to evacuate the building.

His parents moved to the US, and the shooter was born in the US. His cousin states he was a muslim.

Mr Hasan said his cousin was a US-born Muslim who had joined the military after high school. He had served as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC, which treats many badly wounded troops.

Col Terry Lee, a retired officer who worked with him at the military base in Texas, described angry confrontations between Maj Hasan and other officers after he expressed his views.

Maj Hasan was reportedly fighting orders to be deployed to Iraq at the end of the month, claiming that he was the victim of harassment and insults because of his Arab background and his faith.

"He was making outlandish comments condemning our foreign policy and claimed Muslims had the right to rise up and attack Americans," Col Lee told Fox News.

"He said Muslims should stand up and fight the aggressor and that we should not be in the war in the first place." He said that Maj Hasan said he was "happy" when a US soldier was killed in an attack on a military recruitment centre in Arkansas in June. An American convert to Islam was accused of the shootings.

Col Lee said that other officers had told him that Maj Hasan had said "maybe people should strap bombs on themselves and go to Time Square" in New York.

He said he was aware that the major had been subject to "name calling" during heated arguments with other officers.

Federal law enforcement officials have said Maj Hasan had come to their attention at least six months ago because of internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.

The officials said the postings appeared to have been made by Maj Hasan but they were still trying to confirm that he was the author.

Maj Hasan's cousin Nader Husan said he was happy working for the military but did dread deployment to Iraq.

He received his medical degree from the military’s Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.

Major Malik Nadal Hasan, the US army officer alleged to have gone on on a shooting spree at a military base in Texas, killing 11 people and wounding more than 30 others, is alive but wounded, officials have said.

The announcement came hours after it was reported that Maj Hasan had been shot dead by the authorities after he allegedly walked into a training centre and opened fire on fellow soldiers who were having last minute medical check-ups before being deployed to Afghanistan.

Maj Hasan was in custody and was in a stable condition, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said. The death toll from the shooting remains at 12.

Gun fire later erupted around the base as two alleged accomplices, also US soldiers, were captured and police said there may have been more than one gunman.

One of them had barricaded himself in a traumatic brain injury unit where he was surrounded by SWAT teams. Four police officers were wounded before he was arrested.

CNN also reported that one of his handguns was a semi-auto... reportedly.
