I spent my time getting an education instead of being a grunt so I'll have to pass on fighting you. You're a complete idiot Al, I have friends who are at Fort Hood, people I'd see every weekend for years. My best friend has her husband and two brothers there right now. If one of them had been shot I'd be going to a funeral right now, not sitting here entertaining you. All because I'm disgusted that they are failing to afford these people the protection they deserve doesn't make me any less patriotic than you. You need to get off this stereotypical "Don't talk about the infantry brah!" mindset anytime someone has a different point of view than you. Your life experience as a glorified security guard doesn't give you the final word on all things America.

While it would be nice to have guards every where, it's just not possible. Hell, every base/post I've been to (in America) doesn't even have military members primarily guarding the gate, it's contracted out to security companies.

Those contracted security company guards are on average 10x the cost of keeping enlisted person doing the same job. The "efficiency" of our military forces is a complete joke, unless you live under a rock you can't deny it.

If there were 10 million dollars worth of valuable equipment in that building and anyone could just walk in at their leisure instead of housing hundreds of troops that place would have had an armed guard.

*Shrug* maybe you're right, maybe it's just unavoidable and we should accept people going crazy and killing dozens of troops on occasions as part of doing business since clearly it's not feasible to provide them the same amount of armed protection per head that you'd find outside a typical downtown bar at last call on a Friday night.

If they searched every single vehicle coming onto every base, the military would come to a stand still in these big bases in the US. Searching a vehicle wouldn't find a handgun in his pocket or in his backpack or something. The killer in this case probably even had a security clearance and was doing well enough in the army to make Major, so someone missed something with this guy somewhere along the line obviously.

It's pretty clear you have no idea what you're talking about. You cannot check every single vehicle that enters a base. I'm not sure if it has been mentioned yet or not, but from my experience (Worked 9 years as a civilian at a Navy training school on a military base) they do random searches. I don't know how they determine what vehicle they stop, but I have been searched quite a few times.

As far as searches go, in over 5 years of being stationed at Fort Campbell (I think it's the 5th largest) I never once got searched. My wife on the other hand got searched probably half a dozen times in a little over 3 years of living on base (and 1 year working there).

As it is now, if the 101st isn't deployed, there are lines of cars stretching for a mile outside of the post (gate 7 for a while would go nearly 2 miles) at almost every single gate in the morning. If they had to inspect each one, no one would ever get to work. Now nearly double the population, if we're talking about Fort Hood.

No, everyone else is just somewhat realistic. You wouldn't expect a police department to be able to prevent anyone from being mugged in a city.

At Fort Hood, there are dozens of soldiers at ANY building. They should have an armed guard at EVERY single building? Seriously?

I was never searched going on to base when I was in the Navy at Norfolk. Right around the time of the African embassy bombings they started looking under cars for bombs and they started checking IDs and not just waving through anyone with a decal. Searching every vehicle going onto the largest naval base in the country would be impossible while still getting work done, I'm sure a huge base like FT Hood is the same way.

The only place I was ever searched was at Naval Nuclear Prototype school in Saratoga Springs, NY. That however was ran by the DoE and lockheed. Full metal detectors and searches of everything in and out. The place was tiny though and would be impractical on a large scale.
