He could put a little credibility back into it by refusing it. Play it along the lines of I didnt accomplish anything in the two weeks that they considered me for this thus I dont deserve it?

Naw...

Honestly, its their reward, prize, or whatever. They can do whatever you want. If they want to throw away the credibility of it or whatnot, its their business.

Well ideally the award brings international attention and some hard cash to a man or woman who is out there making those kind of sacrifices. So these hard working folk go from unknown to 'know' (if not necessarily well known) Yet another reason it was bullshit.

Interesting that the people who seem to care the most about it are the same people saying how meaningless it is is and what a joke it is.

Us non-Anti-Obama folks just kind of shrugged and got on with our day. Even Obama didn't care, he was probably pissed because he and his guys had to bust ass to figure out how to accept it and pretend to care.

So for the "non-Anti-Obama folks" cynicism is the new hope? How far the mighty have fallen -- and in only ten months. One wonders where y'all will be in twenty months.

As for wishing the award would matter -- "we are the dreamers of dreams."

The peace prize has been a load of bullshit for several decades, if not since its inception, and even though giving it to Obama is unwarranted, I think giving it to Yunus and especially Gore was worse. The way I see it, this is like that fat/stupid/whatever kid in kindergarten giving away his toys to get other kids to play with him. The prize is both a thinly veiled political tool as well as an attempt by our government to put Norway "on the map" internationally by playing up our current narrative as peace champions of the world.

This is coming from a liberal socialist from Norway, by the way.

It did seem like a joke when I read about it but no accomplishments towards peace?

Obama is the most powerful black man in America and he hasn't shot anyone, or stole a bike, or even raped any white women.. yet.

I'm not sure if you're serious Soriak, but if you really think they deserved the peace prize you (and the commitee) have a very broad definition of "peace". I'd prefer it if they stopped awarding it every single year and instead saved it for when someone contributes to actually ending a war. It's supposed to be the peace prize, not the powerpoint prize or the poverty prize.

I'm a huge fan of Yunus' work and microfinancing in general, but it has nothing to do with creating peace, unless you correlate poverty levels to war zones and argue that reducing poverty reduces the risk of war, in which case you have a valid argument, but one I disagree with.

never understood how you can get a peace prize from a presentation in a shitty movie about man made global warming which doesnt exist and if it did is as uncontrollable as its cause. just the fact we have 6 billion people living breathing eating, shitting and farting will cause an increase in global temperature. If we wanted to end that we would have to eliminate a percentage of the population which wouldnt be very peaceful now would it?

Your grasp of complex situations is astounding. Gore didn't get the Peace Prize only because of his "presentation in a shitty movie". His involvement in environmental issues goes back to the late '70's when he was one of the first politicians to actually turn things like clean air, clean water and toxic waste into real political issues that need addressing. He was the first national politician to actually hold hearings about climate change and even wrote a book about it in 1992 before he was even elected as VP. Prior to winning the Peace Prize he has either been directly or indirectly involved in the founding of numerous organizations based on sustainable environmental technologies and strategies.

I know it's your modus operandi to dumb an issue down as much as possible, but do your best to at least attempt to make a reasonable argument before making yourself look dumber than you already do.

Also...

Martin Luther King won the prize at age 35. He hadnt done anything really at that point.. just some community organizing and few good speeches. Nothing had actually been accomplished in 1963. Not one civil rights law passed, not one racist law repealed. Can anyone here doubt that he deserved it?

in 1984 its awarded to Desmond Tutu, while Apartheid is still firmly in place.

In 1935 Carl Von Ossietzky won it... a journalist in Germany who opposed Hitler. In 1935... How'd that work out for him in the end?

There are other examples. The point is that this isnt an award given for lifetime achievement, or individual accomplishments. Its a nod or an acknowledgment of a person or group who is moving things in the right direction. Sometimes that's post facto, sometimes it isn't.

So you can say about this award for Obama the same thing you would would have said in 1935, 1963 or 1984....

"Thats nice... but let's see"

Except all three of those people had put up with very real personal security risks to themselves.
