+66 Internets | I've run and done a ton of abusive shit to my knees over the years, and I've never had any chronic knee or leg problems. My hips bother me sometimes, I think from my skating stride. Running isn't going to automatically destroy his knees. |

+78 Internets | This, never had a single joint problem ever, even with running/marching everyday in the Army. Tread mill or eliptical all you want, nothing will work you like beating your feet around your neighborhood. |

| Being 'worried' about tearing up your knees is the pussy's way of saying, wahhh, I'm too fat to run ![]() ![]() ![]() . Get real and go jog a mile, pussy.

Also, some days it is 100+ here. I have a problem running in that kinda heat right now, so I'd rather be able to use the treadmill instead of not run. | |

| Well, I don't have any firsthand info, but, my best friend thru childhood (who is no longer, and I haven't actually seen in a good 8 years), was pretty overweight. I'll bet he was close to 300 in high school. A guy at work came up to me and asked if I had seen him recently, since we all went to school together. I admitted I hadn't and he said "Dude, he's skinny as hell now...he's like half the man he was." So, I dunno. Maybe he's been on a desert island eating coconuts and shellfish for the past 8 years. I really couldn't care less, honestly. But, I'd say, where there's a will, there's a way. |

+78 Internets | Ha, I kind of wish I joined as Infantry or even armored, the shit equipment we had to use was horrible. Infantry had all new equipment and a lot more freedom during basic, I also saw them doing a ton of exercises that we never did like 4 man log runs and shit. |

+140 Internets | If you're really worried about your knees, you need supportive running shoes (figure out if you tend to run on the sides of your feet and correct it), then you need to equally develop your quads and hamstrings. My beast of a coach, when I used to be into long-distance running, had diesel/runner hamstrings that basically pulled his knee out of alignment because his quads were (relatively) weaker. Then it would wear down the cartilage, and bam. Pain. When he figured it out, he never had a problem with it since. The man is 50+ now and runs a monstrous Boston. Running doesn't mean you tear your knees to shreds, if you run smart. Also arkk: |

| I have terrible arch support (flat feet) and when I started running regularly I began feeling immense pain in my ankles, knees and back. I had custom “athletic” orthotics made so I could wear them while running. It took a few days to get used to them and I had a few blisters which hurt like hell, but eventually they went away and when I started running with them the previous pain was completely gone. Best investment I've made in addition to good running shoes. In some cases you can correct the issue with exercises like Alcestis mentioned, but if you’re too far gone you may need that extra support.
