The problem with this line of argument is that while it makes sense from a general point of view, it makes far less sense from an individual point of view. It doesn't really matter whether European colonization made Africa better or not if you, personally, perceive that you were wronged. How is that different from "well, if that European didn't enslave my grandparents, someone else would've because I live in Africa and in Africa people get enslaved"?

Some blacks benefited from European colonization. Others were harmed by it. By the same token, some Europeans engaged in slavery, others didn't. It is unfair to paint them with the same brush, much less all their descendants. To use a recent event as an example, China has brought economic development to Xinjiang (East Turkestan) - something like 17% annual GDP growth, if I'm not mistaken - and prosperity to a certain segment of its community. But that doesn't mean there aren't many Uyghurs who feel victimized and oppressed, and who blame their present situation - reasonably - on the people in charge. And just as in this case, the Chinese counter-argument is that it's the Uyghurs' own fault that they are impoverished, since plenty of opportunities have been provided. Yet, the inescapable fact is that those in charge are always responsible for what occurs, and the fact that someone would've been victimized anyways does not make it right for you to victimize them.
